The Festival of Two Worlds’ historical yearbooks’ section – to which the latest issues of the “Long Ago in Spoleto” column are dedicated – continue with a particularly full-bodied volume, that of 1967. Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” directed by Menotti with scenes by Henry Moore, the Ballet of the Stuttgart State Theatre, “Il Principe Costante” directed by Grotowski, “Le Diavolerie. Appunti sull’angoscia”, by Alessandro Fersen, Alberto Testa’s ballets, MaMa’s experiments, Carandente’s exhibitions, the experience of the geodesic dome of Fuller’s SpoletoSphere, together they all justify its specific weight, as well as the tenth anniversary of Menotti’s creation, providing an opportunity to worthily celebrate the anniversary with a huge special issue that covers most of the pages of the yearbook.
For this reason, given the richness of the textual and figurative apparatus, we decided to concentrate the column, usually referring to several years of the Festival, on the single, intense edition of the 1967 yearbook.
In addition to the cover and the programme, almost all the photos presented are taken from the exhaustive excursus contained in the second part of the book, characterised by numerous snapshots of great impact and by very interesting testimonies, Rafael Alberti’s visionary and touching account of the pairing of Menotti and Spoleto, and then the essays that trace the Festival’s ten years and are entrusted to William Weaver for music, Sandro de Feo for theatre, Vittoria Ottolenghi for ballet, Ariodante Marianni for poetry, Giovanni Carandente for art and Sergio Frosali for cinema.
The yearbook closes with a long contribution by Giancarlo del Re, who dedicates a more general piece to the Festival, on the impact that Menotti and the event have had on Spoleto and the strong international dimension that the city has regained in just a few years.
A precious attachment to the yearbook is a detachable, pocket-sized booklet containing all programmes of the Festival’s first ten years.
