Madama Butterfly, by Teatro Lirico Sperimentale

A JAPANESE TRAGEDY RE-ENACTED

At the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoleto, 17, 18 and 19 September 2021preview for schools, 65+ and associations’ on 14, 15 and 16 September 2021

«It seems paradoxical that at a time of separation, distancing and isolation an immersive process of spectator participation can be generated for a shared theatricality. The deconstruction of the stage space accompanied by various levels of narration, the story of Butterfly’s solitude and centrality around which everything revolves, becomes the metaphor of a return to the theatre through an oriental-inspired ritual.» Stefano Monti, direction and staging

After the successful Intermezzi del ‘700 at the Teatro Caio Melisso, the 75th Opera Season moves to the Teatro Nuovo di Spoleto with the new production of Giacomo Puccini‘s MADAMA BUTTERFLY that will debut on Friday 17 September at 20.30 [1st performance]. The play will first be staged for schools, 65+ and associations on Tuesday 14 and Thursday 16 September at 18.00, and Wednesday 15 at 16.00, will then be repeated on Saturday 18 September at 20.30 (2nd performance) and Sunday 19 September at 17.00 (3rd performance).

The production will also be staged at the Teatro Morlacchi di Perugia on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September at ore 20.30.

Madama Butterfly, on a libretto by Giacomo Giacosa and Luigi Illica, is one of the best-known titles in Puccini’s repertoire. However, the direction will offer the audience new insights and perspectives on the opera.

«In this new production – comments musical director Carlo Palleschi – we will try, together with the young performers selected by the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, to analytically retrace the compositional procedures adopted by Puccini to give back to the audience in a conscious, and I would say almost “scientific” way, the sensations and emotional situations conceived and calibrated with extreme refinement and precision by the musician. We will also try to highlight the modernity of the musical structures that are hidden behind an apparent ease of listening, the effectiveness of which has allowed this drama with its particular colour to conquer generations of spectators, becoming one of the most loved and performed operas in the entire opera repertoire»

It was also the restrictions imposed by the containment of Covid 19 that led to a rethinking of the theatre space, which in a certain sense inspired the direction and staging, as the director Stefano Monti writes: “To make the physical distancing possible, a necessary condition for performing theatre at the time of Covid 19, I had to take a different look at the theatre building and its architecture: re-organise the stage space and dilate the space set aside for the artistic masses. Trying to go beyond the codified rules of musical theatre was a reason for stimulation and research”.

The musical direction is entrusted to maestro Carlo Palleschi, while the direction and staging to Stefano Monti.
