Pumpkin Umbria

The first event in Umbria dedicated to pumpkins

From 7 October to 2 November at Villa Galileo Galilei in Baiano di Spoleto, Pumpkin Umbria will take place, the first event dedicated to the world of pumpkins in Umbria, supported by the City of Spoleto.

In the Anglo-American tradition, in the period leading up to Halloween, families go to the pumpkin fields and choose a pumpkin to take home, to colour, carve or use as a simple furnishing accessory.

The Pumpkin field in Baiano will host thousands of pumpkins of different qualities: from pumpkins for culinary use, to pumpkins for decoration, to ornamental pumpkins, but also numerous attractions. Visitors will be able to visit the ‘pumpkin house’, eat with the ‘scarecrow’, admire the ‘blue pumpkins’ aimed at raising awareness of diversity as a value, enter the ‘straw maze’ and finally discover the ‘magic house’ dedicated to workshops and recipes with pumpkins.

The aim of Pumpkin Umbria is to educate and raise awareness among people, especially young people, by bringing them closer to the land and its products, encouraging local production and purchases.

The initiative, which concerns anyone wishing to approach the world of agriculture, is aimed at young people, families, schools, organisations and associations. The spaces of the villa are specially designed and built to welcome families, schools and groups in general.

In addition, educational activities will be carried out with school groups and children, to show them and bring them closer to a healthy lifestyle respecting the beauty of nature, to raise awareness of biodiversity, low environmental impact social farming and the protection of the environment itself, promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable behaviour. Every Monday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be a workshop and didactic area open to all and completely free of charge with entrance from the Proloco di Baiano area, a partner in the event, while the main entrance will be used to enter the park and the prices listed on the event website will apply (https://www.pumpkinumbria.it/). The workshops will also cover the fruit and vegetable sector, from working the land, to growing the plant, sowing and finally the plant: from seed to fruit.

Visitors will also be able to get to know the different types of pumpkins and learn how to carve and decorate them. A blue pumpkin area will also be set up, designed to raise awareness for social diversity, in particular the topic of autism.

Visiting pumpkin fields in the Fall is a tradition that originated in the United Kingdom, particularly in Celtic-dominated Ireland, and is closely linked to Halloween. In recent years, this experience has also spread to Italy, where there are more and more fields dedicated to pumpkin picking.
