Palazzo Collicola Winter Exhibitions @ Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive
Dec 3 2016 – Feb 12 2017 all-day
<!--:it-->Mostre invernali di Palazzo Collicola<!--:--><!--:en-->Palazzo Collicola Winter Exhibitions<!--:--> @ Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The marks caused to Palazzo Collicola by the recent earthquake turn into art. PALAZZO COLLICOLA ARTI VISIVE‘s director Gianluca Marziani instructed the artist Vincenzo Pennacchi to create an installation that would give an aesthetic and symbolic value to the fissures produced by the earthquake on the museum’s walls. LA CREPA (The Crack), is one of the proposals of Palazzo Collicola’s winter exhibitions that will be on show until February 12.

An important donation of six sculptures from 1963 by BEVERLY PEPPER is one of the highlights of these winter exhibitions. The works, donated to the contemporary art museum by the artist, testifies of the long-term relationship between the sculptor and Umbrian territory. In 1962 Beverly Pepper was the only woman as well as one of the three American artists (together with David Smith and Alexander Calder) who were invited to take part in the exhibition SCULPTURES IN THE CITY, curated by Giovanni Carandente.

The first stage of CORTESIE PER GLI OSPITI (Courtesies to Guests) project will feature works by Giovanni Bonelli’ private gallery in Milan.  COURTESIES TO GUESTS is a new cycle dedicated to the world of private galleries with their stories, choices, passions and intuitions… a narrative and engaging journey, imagined as a cultural adventure. Giovanni Bonelli’s gallery, opened in 2012 in the “Isola” district, features works by emerging artists as well as established national and international artists (Maurizio Mochetti, Gianni Pettena, Daniel Spoerri).

Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive will also host  an ambitious project connecting FOOD and VISUAL ARTS: OBIC, originating from an idea by Anna Paola Lo Presti and Gianluca Marziani, is the title of a big book in which the featured art works explore the history of food, from its origins to primary ingredients, traditional dishes and innovations.

Three new sculptures by Spoleto’s artist Cristina MMR Bonucci will be presented within the cycle TERRITORIO Storie di artisti umbri (Territory, Stories of Umbrian artists). Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive’s exhibition pays tribute to Kengo Kuma’s architectural look, to the holistic spirit of its buildings. The works have been set up in the Piano Nobile’s main room.

GROUND LAYER, Francesco Irnem’s new project, is part of SATELLITE COLLICOLA. It has been conceived and created especially for the phisical, thematic and conceptual characteristics of Spoleto’s Roman House (Via di Visiale), with its exciting living spaces and its elegant mosaic floors.  (on show until March 26)

Finally, L’ECO DEL BOSCO (The Echo of the Wood) is Franco Marrocco’s exhibition. Marrocco’s artistic path seems to consciously aim at reducing the unnecessary. His artistic quality has an oriental profile and seems to be influenced by Japanese culture of ceramics, where the talent shows itself in the silence of the suspended step.

LIVES ARE NEVER STILL

Mezz’ora dopo la chiusura, Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive’s event organized by Sistema Museo, returns on Friday February 17, 2017 at 7 pm.

For several years, in his Paris studio, Alexander Calder offered performances of his famous Circus. Some of the most important artists of the time – like Miro, Duchamp and Mondrian – were his privileged spectators. Today, thanks to a rare video, you can relive the joyful atmosphere of those performances during which the American artist entertained his friends by animating small wire models.

The evening continues with a tasting of local products by the Caffè Collicola. The event is organized in collaboration with Con Spoleto – the Spoleto hotel managers’ association.

Guided visit – full fare € 7,00
Guided visit – reduction € 5,00 for Spoleto CARD holders and habitués

LIVES ARE NEVER STILL

Mezz’ora dopo la chiusura, Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive’s event organized by Sistema Museo, returns on Friday February 10, 2017 at 7 pm.

The meeting, entitled Lives are never still, will focus on Vanitas, a painting genre that reflects on the ephemeral condition of existence through the representation of symbolic elements.

The visit is inspired by the amazing sculptures by Bertozzi & Casoni, on display at Palazzo Collicola until Feb. 12, that elaborate the theme in a contemporary way, stimulating comparisons with specimens of the past.

The evening continues with a tasting of local products by the Caffè Collicola. The event is organized in collaboration with Con Spoleto – the Spoleto hotel managers’ association.

Swan Lake @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Feb 11 @ 21:15
<!--:it-->Il Lago dei Cigni<!--:--><!--:en-->Swan Lake<!--:--> @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The magic of Swan Lake, one of the most famous and acclaimed ballets of the twentieth century, will kick off Live in Umbria, a recently presented series of events organized in Umbria by Athanor Events. On February 11th (9.15 pm), Raffaele Paganini National Company will stage Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, directed and choreographed by Luigi Martelletta, at Spoleto’s Teatro Nuovo ‘Gian Carlo Menotti’.

Swan Lake is a great love story which ends with the death of the two unhappy lovers to the tune of a rousing music. The show was born from an idea that for many years the director and choreographer Luigi Martelletta pursued and hoped to stage. His long and intense career as a principal dancer at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and in many other Italian and European theaters enabled him to study in depth, to examine and to dance many times this spectacular ballet.

Strongly linked to academic tradition, Martelletta proposes a more streamlined, more lively work, lightening all the mannerisms and pantomimes that are part of the classical repertoire, while maintaining the original choreography: the swans, the Spanish dance, the Russian dance, the waltz , the pas de deux, and much more.

The particularity of this show consists in the ability to combine fantasy and reality, to present itself as alive and topical. And this is the stylistic peculiarity of this ‘Swan Lake’. On stage, the absolute beauty of athletic, seductive dancers, like international etoiles Arianne Lafita Gonzalvez and Vittorio Galloro, together with outstanding soloists, will stage a popular success that still exerts an enduring appeal because it embodies the romantic aspiration towards an unattainable ideal.

Curating the exhibiting space will be the figure of Luigi De Ambrogi, former avantgarde gallerist, Abbondio’s comrade in arms and privileged spectator of 15 years of exhibitions with 28 selected artists.

The opening is on Saturday 4 March; the exhibition wil go on till 12 May, 2017.

Destruction for Creation – SOICHIRO SHIMIZU at Palazzo Collicola @ Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive

<!--:it-->Destruction for Creation - Mostra di SOICHIRO SHIMIZU a Palazzo Collicola<!--:--><!--:en-->Destruction for Creation - SOICHIRO SHIMIZU at Palazzo Collicola<!--:--> @ Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

RESIDENCE COLLICOLA is a format for young artists from abroad, who are called for their first exhibiting adventure in Italy; this time it is SOICHIRO SHIMIZU‘s turn, a Japanese artist who is crossing an ideal linguistic bridge between European values and Asian culture. Born and grown in Japan, Shimizu has been spending some time in Bangkok in the last years, where he conducts part of his major researches. This is his debut in Spoleto, after some trips to Umbria. DESTRUCTION FOR CREATION is a title that was envisaged after the August and October earthquakes in Central Italy, when Shimizu’s project was maturing in his Bangkok and Tokyo ateliers. Japan’s antiseismic culture is a an ethical and architectural pillar of Japanese civilization. Hence the idea that each destruction process becomes the prompt of creation that absorbs and levels all mistakes in a shared growth, turning yesterday’s false steps into tomorrow’s skilled pace, infusing the work with the value of experience and the sign of holistic rebirth.

Umbria and Japan are far from each other on a world scale, yet close for their inner geological features, subterranean dynamism, the deep silence of their natural environments, their meditative mysticism that finds its chamber of human wonders on the mountains.

The exhibition will go on till 28 May, 2017.

<!--:it-->Ospiti in Rocca - Tesori della Valnerina<!--:--><!--:en-->Guests At The Rocca - Treasures From The Valnerina<!--:--> @ Rocca Albornoziana | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

Rocca Albornoz – National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto

5 March – 30 July 2017

GUESTS AT THE ROCCA – from 5 March

TREASURES FROM THE VALNERINA – from 9 April

An extraordinary body of works join the collections on display at the Rocca Albornoz – National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, for a unique exhibition, a tribute to the vitality of Umbria, a land that knows how to react. The exhibition is strictly connected to the fundraising campaign to support the restoration of works damaged by the earthquake.

Umbria is a land that reacts to the events with the strength of her cultural heritage. From 5 March to 30 July 2017, the Rocca Albornoz – National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto will host a series of works that were spared from ruin after the recent earthquake in Central Italy, thanks to an important exhibition organized by Regione Umbria, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Assets and Tourism, Spoleto-Norcia Archdiocese and the City of Spoleto. Sistema Museo will be the exhibition’s operative managing subject. The event is included in the “Discovering Umbria” programme, supported by Regione Umbria to promote and highlight the museum activities.

The exhibition “Treasures from the Valnerina” opens on 5 March with a body of works coming from areas of Marche, Lazio and Umbria, that were struck by the earthquake, an evidence of solidarity among areas sharing such a mournful event, as well as cultural and artistic roots. The exhibition features works selected following various criteria, yet they all show a very deep symbolism, such as the 16th-century Wooden Crucifix from the church in Sant’Anatolia di Narco, a 16th-century “Madonna with Child” from Avendita, the Annunciation by Andrea della Robbia from the Castellina Museum, Norcia, an exquisite “Madonna with Child” (painting on table) by Ulisse da Siena, previously at the Diocesan Museum in Ascoli Piceno, and a refined “St. Sebastian” dating to the second half of the 17th century, coming from Scai, close to Amatrice. The exhibition is strictly tied to the crowdfunding campaign that started on 1 February, to support the restoration of other works of art that were damaged by the seism. It is possible to participate in the campaign here: (https://valorecultura.starteed.com/it/lightquake).

From 9 April, a wide selection of works already restored after 24 August 2016, will be included in the exhibition “Treasures from the Valnerina”. These artistic treasures are ambassadors to Italy and to the world of Umbria’s vitality, a “collective tribute” to an invaluable richness of art and history.
The 2016 earthquake struck hard the cultural heritage of an area of Umbria, the Valnerina, which is for many the place of soul. Not only a land of spirituality, tied to St. Benedict and St. Rita from Cascia, but also a harmonious whole of landscape, burgs, churches, and works of art, now wounded by the merciless shocks that started on 24 August and went on for the whole autumn, 2016. The work and self-denial of many who operated in this emergency (MiBACT, Fire Brigade Units, Italian Army, Civil Defence, Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, Volunteers) allowed to rescue many works from damaged churches and museums in Valnerina, and to store them in the Santo Chiodo di Spoleto specialized depot (4000, so far). From here, they will be able to receive the “cures” by restorers at the Vatican Museums, at the Florence Opificio delle Pietre Dure and other skilled restorers, and wait to return to their original settings, when ready. In the meantime, thanks to the project “Discovering Umbria”, it will be possible to see a significant part of them in an exhibition at the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, where they will be on display from 9 April.

What will be possible to see in the Spoleto exhibition is the result of a committment that started soon after the earliest shocks, a sign of the professionalism and competence of the many who were called to protect the cultural heritage. Only a small part of Umbria was directly damaged by the earthquake, even if the images of seriously-struck churches have moved many a heart, but the will of the Umbrian community is that of not giving up and continue to protect their historical and artistic heritage.
The earthquake’s wounds are faced by bodies and people with the invitation to all those who love Umbria to come and visit its museums and monuments, which are open, vital, and offer an extraordinary view on history, art, environment and traditions.

DISCOVERING UMBRIA

“Discovering Umbria” shows a land that reacts to the events with the strength of its cultural heritage. Art and history meet in the region’s museum network, that features more than 170 museums, ecomuseums and archaeological sites. In the land of Giotto, Signorelli, Perugino and Burri, each museum is an evidence of the connection between community and land.
Museums represent the main tool to know the history, art, burgs and landscape of Umbria: hundreds of proposals, itineraries and curiosities that raise intense emotions, an invitation to discover the art that has marked the history of this land and become one with the contemporary.

<!--:it-->TRAME LONGOBARDE - Tra architettura e tessuti<!--:--><!--:en-->TRAME LONGOBARDE - exhibition at the Rocca Albornoz<!--:--> @ Rocca Albornoziana | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

An extraordinary reconstruction work on the basis of archaeological information, a trip to discover the Longobards’ daily life through textiles, clothes and jewels of this extraordinary people; the exhibition Trame longobarde: tra architettura e tessuti opens on Thursday 16 March at 12.30, at the National Museum of the Duchy by the Rocca Albornoz. It will be visitable till 18 June (extended to October 1st)

The exhibition returns to Spoleto after four years, and after having been on display in Monte Sant’Angelo, Brescia, and Benevento. Future stages include Cividale del Friuli, the National Museum of the Early Middle Ages in Rome, Ferentillo, Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena).

Textiles and hems were created by the inmates of the Spoleto Jailhouse that have participated in the weaving course, using school looms of the IIS Sansi Leonardi Volta. The compositions were done studying the scarce traces found in the few sources available, the Historia Langobardorum by Paul the Deacon, but the result is an accurate proposal of the old weaving techniques in the Early Middle Ages. Various social ranks are represented, and the visitor will be led by horsey icons and spears, through 4th/8th-century-old finds, to meet the protagonists of Trame Longobarde on the background of images of the Basilica of San Salvatore.

The exhibition is curated by Glenda Giampaoli and Giorgio Flamini, with the scientific support by Donatella Scortecci. The project is the result of an exceptional collaboration of bodies and institutions, including Comune di Spoleto, Regione Umbria, Istituto Sansi Leonardi Volta, the Spoleto Jailhouse, the National Museum of the Duchy, all of them co-ordinated and directed by the Association Italia Langobardorum.

<!--:it-->IL LUSSO NELL’ERA DELLE DISTRAZIONI DIGITALI: FASCINO E CONTRADDIZIONI DEL WEB<!--:--><!--:en-->Luxury in the era of digital distraction<!--:--> @ Cinéma Sala Pegasus | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

A double appointment at the Cinema Sala Pegasus, with the presentation of Alessio Carciofi’s book Digital Detox and the documentary Lo and Behold – Internet: the future is now by Werner Herzog.

An actual “Digital Day” is being organized by Cinema Sala Pegasus and Coworking Spoleto for 16 March. Two appointments to elaborate on the Internet, social media, communication and web marketing, organized with the support of the City of Spoleto.

But, how?

To start with, Spoletan digital strategist and CEO at Digital Detox Alessio Carciofi, will introduce his last book “Digital Detox. Focus and productivity for managers in the era of digital distraction”, published by Hoepli and on sale from 10 March.

The meeting, scheduled at 18.30 at the Cinema Sala Pegasus, will start with a simple, yet challenging question: “What can actually be considered a luxury nowadays?”, which will serve to analyze the values of attention, time and silence, and put them in relation with each other. “Today we’re still convinced that we pay everything through money, but the true currency is the time we can no longer enjoy wrote recently Alessio Carciofi on the Huffington Post – the true revolution is the relation with time, that very time that flees us as flies away while on a smartphone. The time has come for us to start reflecting on our behaviour and find a new balance”. In his presentation, Alessio Carciofi, who has been dealing with marketing, digital communication, and working for some of the most famous Italian tourism brands since 2009, will face the theme of the Digital Felix, a new method that informs enterprises on the theme of in-company well being.

The second appointment is at 21.00, also at the Cinema Sala Pegasus, and will focus on the projection of the documentary “Lo and Behold – Internet: the future is now”. The vision of German director Werner Herzog’s last work will be introduced by Alessio Carciofi, and will be another occasion to try and understand the Internet’s development, its most charming and contradictory aspects, its future and the limits imposed by being constantly online.

L’Umbria si rimette in Moto
The first great event to relaunch tourism in Umbria
Tour Valnerina by motorbike – Let’s start over again from here. Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March.
For further information: www.umbriamoto.it

The cities of Spoleto and Sant’Anatolia di Narco, the Spoleto Moto Club, in collaboration with Centro Rafting Gaia, il CEDRAV-Ecomusei della Valnerina, Spoleto Tourist Guides, Frantoio Il Poggiolo, propose for Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March a charming itinerary, named Valnerina in Moto – Ripartiamo da qui (Italian for Valnerina by motorbike – Let’s start over again from here), to discover breath-taking landscapes and lesser-known burgs, yet rich in history and traditions. Hospitality services will be managed by ConSpoleto.

The event is included in the project L’Umbria si rimette in Moto, the first great event to relaunch tourism in Umbria. Many cities and local motorcycle clubs have joined in, answering to an invitation by the city of Assisi, to draw a number of motorbike itineraries for the enthusiasts and tourists, on the last weekend of March.

The meeting point for the registration of participants will be at the Former Spoleto-Norcia Railway Museum in via Fratelli Cervi 10, and will be open from 8.00 to 16.00. The City of Spoleto is developing a series of benefits for the participants: info at IAT Spoleto, 0743/218620 – email info@iat.spoleto.pg.it

Here’s the itinerary details, to be covered on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March, while on Sunday 26 there will be a guided tour restricted to the first 60 teams that will register by calling 0039 348 7356565.

The tour La Valnerina in Moto – Ripartiamo da qui anticipates what you’ll enjoy along the route since its welcome point, inside the very interesting museum dedicated to one of the most beautiful railroads of the 20th century. The route starts on road SS395 and reaches Piedipaterno, then Castel San Felice with its very beautiful Abbey of St. Felice and Mauro, two Syrian hermits that evangelized the area in the 5th century. Sant’Anatolia di Narco comes next, where it is possible to visit the Hemp Museum (Museo della Canapa), open from 9.00 to 18.00; the museum displays working and weaving tools, a series of textile artifacts and the Textile Labs, restructured in hemp and lime. From Sant’Anatolia di Narco the itinerary goes on toward Gavelli, 1150 m above sea level, deep in the Coscerno/Aspra mountain areas, where eagles nest and where you can find an unexpected gem: a fresco by Giovanni di Pietro, a.k.a. Lo Spagna, portraying Madonna with St. Francis, St. Jerome and St. Anthony. Going on along roads SP 470 and SP 471, you reach Monteleone di Spoleto and its treasures, the farro (emmer, spelt or einkorn), and the Etruscan Chariot, a copy by the School of Manzù of the original, ancient parade chariot in golden bronze with ivory plaques, on display at the MET, NY. The Chariot’s Museum, hosted at the cellar of the Complex of St. Francis, will be opened on the two days of the event from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00. In the afternoon of Saturday 25, from 14.00 to 18.00 it will be possible to taste local products in the square. The itinerary goes on then in the direction of Cascia, where hermitages, parish churches, votive aedicules, villas and castles are but the frame of the outstanding Sanctuary of St. Rita, the saint of impossible causes, and where you can taste the famous Roveja from Civita di Cascia. A historical motorbikes collection will be on display at the Leone XIII parking lot, on Saturday 25. The route goes on in the direction of Norcia, where life is slowly but steadily returning thanks to the will power of the population. As the bikers will leave Norcia toward the West, in Biselli they will be offered a special price by the Gaia Rafting Centre, to descend on rubber boat (nautical equipment will be provided by the Rafting Centre, bikers will only need to be provided with their own bathing suit, wool-cotton shirt, spare socks and towels). At the same centre it will be possible to access the suspended courses over river Corno, also with special prices for the bikers. For these activities, reservation is required, by calling 3487356565 or e-mailing to angelisa@asgaia.it. There is a restaurant in front of the Gaia Rafting Centre, called Ristorante dei Cacciatori, ready to prepare snacks based on the famous product of local charcuterie. Sunday 26, from 11.00 to 14.00, it will be possible to taste a delicious sandwich with pork meat cooked on the spot (please reserve by calling 0743822347). The route goes on then toward Borgo Cerreto, where you turn toward Sellano, whose production of files and rasps is documented since the 18th century: they are still produced following centuries-old methods, a tradition kept at the local museum. From Sellano you go on toward the Soglio Pass, to turn then toward Pié di Cammoro and Spina Nuova, along the old wayfarers’ route heading out to the Holy House of Loreto. Before returning to Spoleto, a visit can be dedicated to the small village of Eggi, a Medieval burg surrounded by centuries-old olive groves that produce a valuable olive oil. The village also stands along the Francis’ Way and the Olive Groves’ Trail, to be covered on foot or by mountain-bike if you wish to reach Assisi.

SPRING DAYS OF FAI 2017 – Extraordinary opening of the Santo Chiodo Works Of Art Depot @ Deposito Beni Culturali
Mar 26 @ 10:00 – 17:30
<!--:it-->Giornate FAI di Primavera 2017 - Apertura straordinaria del deposito dei beni culturali di Santo Chiodo<!--:--><!--:en-->SPRING DAYS OF FAI 2017 - Extraordinary opening of the Santo Chiodo Works Of Art Depot <!--:--> @ Deposito Beni Culturali | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund) holds it as one of the most important places among the ones included in the list of extraordinary openings on the occasion of the 2017 Spring Days of FAI: the Santo Chiodo Cultural Heritage depot, which will be exceptionally visitable on 26 March, 2017.

Conceived after the 1997 seismic swarm and finished by 2008, it was created to give Spoleto an anti-seismic structure to store works of art endangered by prospective similar future events, and at present it keeps 5000 works and boxes with archaeological material coming from the Valnerina. A laboratory is active inside, operated by restorers of the Florentine Opificio delle pietre dure. Its visit allows to fully appreciate our great cultural Heritage, understand the work by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Assets, by law-enforcement agencies, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, and experience the passion and competence at the service of the areas wounded by the seism, to return the signs of their identity.

The visits will be led by students of the “Pontano – Sansi – Leonardi” school in Spoleto. Accesses will be organized on a group basis, maximum 10 pp per group, every 15 minutes, from 10.00 to 17.30. Access will be allowed upon presentation of one’s identity document. The depot is equipped with a surveillance system.

Contributions of at least 2,00 € are encouraged, but not compulsory, and will be gratefully accepted. In case of huge mass attendance, entrances may be closed before scheduled closing time.

The depot is located close to the well signalled Civil Protection Operative Centre (COC – COM), the Santo Chiodo Industrial Area is along the road from Spoleto to Acquasparta (SS 418). Coming from Spoleto, at the big roundabout of Santo Chiodo turn to the right. After 200 m, at another, much smaller roundabout, go straight ahead and (you’re in via dei Tessili now) drive on for half a mile about. The depot is shortly after the COC – COM Civil Protection Operative Centre, on the right, in via dei Tessili.
