PHOTO EXHIBITION | The Hidden Theatre. A story in images @ Museo Archeologico e Teatro Romano di Spoleto
Jul 21 2018 – Dec 31 2019 all-day
<!--:it-->MOSTRA FOTOGRAFICA | Il teatro nascosto. Una storia per immagini<!--:--><!--:en-->PHOTO EXHIBITION | The Hidden Theatre. A story in images<!--:--> @ Museo Archeologico e Teatro Romano di Spoleto | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The exhibition The Hidden Theatre. A story in images is a collection of unpublished photographs dating back to the years of the discovery of the Roman Theatre of Spoleto and its unearthing, from 1938 to 1960.

The exhibition, promoted by the Polo Museale dell’Umbria – Museo Archeologico e Teatro Romano di Spoleto, in collaboration with Astra onlus and the Archivio di Stato di Perugia, section of Spoleto, shows photographs coming from the Accademia Etrusca di Cortona and from the archive of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell’Umbria. The exhibition reveals unpublished aspects of the discovery of the Roman theatre and the transformation of the complex of S.Agata from a judicial prison (1867-1957) to a museum.

The history of the monastery of S. Agata – already known thanks to the research of G. Curti, S. Di Sante Coaccioli, S. Gubbiotti, resulting in the 2011 documented book “The Roman Theatre and the former monastery of S.Agata. Chronicle of its transformations” – is now enriched by photographs taken by the then inspector archaeologist Umberto Ciotti, who documented every step of the demolition and excavation work.

PICASSO. RITRATTO INTIMO – PICASSO. INTIMATE PORTRAIT
Photos by Edward Quinn

15 December 2018 – 31 March 2019
MAG Palazzo Bufalini Piazza Duomo Spoleto

On the occasion of the forty-fifth anniversary of his death, and in conjunction with numerous exhibitions around the world dedicated to him, Spoleto celebrates the genius of the Spanish artist with the exhibition PICASSO. INTIMATE PORTRAIT Photos by Edward Quinn, presenting a large series of shots, some of them unpublished, taken by Edward Quinn (Dublin 1920-Switzerland 1997), the photojournalist who followed Picasso (1881-1973) to the Côte d’Azur and portrayed him, with his permission, for about twenty years.

From December 15, 2018 to March 31, 2019, MAG MetaMorfosi Art Gallery in Palazzo Bufalini in Piazza Duomo will feature about eighty photos (two sizes on display 40×50 and 30×40 cm) that tell the story of an absolutely private Picasso: among his women, lovers and friends, among his children, the result of many passions over the years, among the many friends and acquaintances who populated his canvases as well as the laid tables and the beaches by the sea. As many as 26 of these photos are unpublished and never printed before. The photos come from the Quinn Archive, Zurich, and were selected by the exhibition’s curator, Wolfgang Frei, the photographer’s nephew.

The exhibition, produced and organized by MetaMorfosi under the patronage of the City of Spoleto, is the result of the special friendship that linked Picasso to Edward Quinn, as his nephew explains by reconstructing their first meeting on the Côte d’Azur: “”Lui, il ne me dérange pas”, (“He does not bother me”) says Picasso after having been photographed for the first time during his work on March 23, 1953. So Quinn became one of the few photographers who was allowed to photograph him at work and who was accepted in his private life.

Born in 1920, Quinn moved to Munich in the late 1940s. Probably there has never been a place like the Côte d’Azur of the 1950s and 1960s where so many stars, politicians and artists have lived or spent their holidays. One of the personalities who settled on the Côte d’Azur was Picasso: he already was a star. Quinn managed to take his first photos of Picasso with his two children in 1951. The artist liked the photos and agreed to the request for further shots. Two years later, the first photo shoot took place with Picasso working with ceramics. Quinn did not belong to the breed of the insistent paparazzi, like tabloid photographers. In this he was too much of an Irish gentleman. He soon became a friend of Picasso, as shown by the 1954 dedication to the linocut “Toros en Vallauris”: “Para el amigo Quinn – el buen fotógrafo”.

“Even if Quinn – Frei tells us – was a dear friend, it was almost never possible to make an appointment with Picasso in advance. Often Picasso gave the order not to be disturbed. Almost all visits were unexpected and improvised. However, this was in line with Quinn’s way of working: his shots did not need long technical preparations. He didn’t use the tripod and refused to artificially light the rooms and have Picasso pose for a photo. The aim was to show under what conditions the artist created his works”.

The objective was unconventional, credible, authentic, documentary photography. The photographs on display, many of which have never been published, reveal how the artist was inspired by everyday things and people, but also by the extraordinary things that surrounded him. In this vision of his personality, of the people behind the images, also clichés about reality and opposites become visible: free time alongside work, everyday life in relation to art, Casanova and the family man, the clown and the extrovert joker, but also the very attentive master.

A fascinating intimate portrait of the artist that covers a period of over 20 years and tells an unusual Picasso, authentic and rich in humanity.

National Museum of the Duchy (Spoleto) and Temple of Clitunno (Campello sul Clitunno)
The intentional reuse of Roman worked stone in the Lombard Period

Organized by Associazione Italia Langobardorum and Polo Museale dell’Umbria

Opening: Tuesday, December 18 at 12:00 at the Temple of Clitunno and at 15:00 at the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto.

The respect and emulation of the ancient, very widespread in the Lombard period, is one of the most obvious phenomena of that process of acculturation and integration of Lombards, very important for their affirmation. It is along the Flaminia Nova, in the stretch between Spoleto and Campello, that one can find numerous monuments that testify to the reuse of ancient materials in buildings of the early Middle Ages and Romanesque age, many of which arose near cemetery areas outside the city.

The exhibition is part of the cycle of events entitled Longobardi in vetrina (Lombards in the limelight), a project within a series of activities promoted by the Associazione Italia Langobardorum – management structure of the UNESCO site Longobards in Italy. The places of power (568-774 A.D.) of which the municipalities of Spoleto and Campello are founding members – for the dissemination of knowledge of Lombard culture.

The exhibitions will be accompanied by educational and training activities and conferences that makes this project the first nationwide exhibition dedicated to the Lombard people, the largest in terms of extension and involvement of institutions and archaeological heritage. The 15 exhibitions will all be inaugurated by the end of January 2018 and will be collected in a single printed catalogue and in a single virtual exhibition created with MOVIO, the multifunctional open source platform promoted by MiBAC, used to create and publish exhibition guides, digital extensions of real and virtual exhibitions.

Longobardi in vetrina is part of the project Exchange and sharing between museums to enhance the Lombard heritage for which the Association has obtained from MiBACT the admission to funding under Law 77/2006 ‘Measures for the protection and use of UNESCO sites’.

Thursday 24 January at 16 – Spoleto

15 exhibitions are held at the same time and 7 themes are treated within the project Longobards in the limelight. Exchanges and sharing between museums to enhance the Longobard heritage, conceived and coordinated by Italia Langobardorum Association, management structure of the UNESCO site “Longobards in Italy. The places of power (568-774 A.D.).

An ambitious project that enjoys the patronage of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and obtained the contribution of MIBAC Law 77/2006, dedicated to Italian UNESCO sites.

The project aims at raising knowledge about Longobard culture through the enhancement of the museums located in the seven monumental complexes that are part of the UNESCO site, but also of those sites that were involved by the passage of the Longobards. Collaboration and synergy between museums are encouraged by temporary exchanges of artworks, divided into thematic exhibitions, hosted in the 6 museums of the UNESCO site network (National Archaeological Museum of Cividale del Friuli, antiquarium of Castelseprio, Museum of Santa Giulia in Brescia, National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, Diocesan Museum of Benevento, TECUM Museums of Monte Sant’Angelo) the Temple of Campello sul Clitunno, and eight other museums throughout Italy.

Exchanges between museums, temporary exhibitions and cultural support activities are also enhanced by an online virtual exhibition created with MOVIO (www.longobardinvetrina.it) and by a single catalogue, characterising this project as the first exhibition to be held nationwide, conceived as a set of exhibitions on Longobard culture; the largest exhibition in terms of territorial extension and involvement of institutions and historical-archaeological heritage.

Spoleto has focused on the theme of Manual Intelligence: Craft Production and Techniques in the Lombard Period.

Two exhibitions, promoted by the City of Spoleto, will be held at the Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto and at the MuCiv – MAME of Rome.

These exhibitions illustrate the technical-productive knowledge of the Lombards in Italy and identify the processes that led this people to integrate their technical heritage, typical of the Germanic population, with the Roman-Byzantine Mediterranean matrix, in a period of transition between the late ancient period and the early Middle Ages.

The Lombards had a particular “vocation for iron, steel and metallurgy” in line with the high technological level of production processes in the rest of the Germanic world, distinguishing themselves in the production of jewellery, weapons and tools.

To illustrate their craft skills, metal objects found in the necropolises of Nocera Umbra (PG) and Castel Trosino (AP) were selected. These objects were created with different techniques: mould casting, cloisonné, punching, filigree, damascening and niello.

Finally, there is also a brief reference to ceramic production, which shows its own clearly identifiable characteristics.

Opening ceremonies will be held on Thursday, January 24 at 16 in Spoleto and on January 29 at 11:30 in Rome.

SOLUBLE CINEMA – Playing with Cinema @ Sala Monterosso - Villa Redenta
Mar 16 – Mar 17 all-day

SOLUBLE  CINEMA – 16 and 17 March 2019
THE GAME

Eleven invited young artists will challenge two juries and create a no-budget short movie in 23 hours.

The inspiration comes from the immediatist vision of Futurism and aims at stimulating creativity through impulsive, irrational and improvised acts. The artists will work on subjects that will be assigned through random selection on the first night and will then have 23 hours’ time to finally present their works.

Rules:
– the film must have no budget
– it must be conceived, created and shown in 23 hours and will have to be destroyed thereafter
– it must be visible as a film normally is, by an audience sitting in the dark looking at a screen
– its length must not exceed 6′ 33″ and eleven frames
– some of the scenes must be shot in the alleys in downtown Spoleto
– after its vision the film will be “forgotten”, canceled, made unique and unrepeatable through cathartic destruction; the methods for such destruction will be up to the director’s sensitiveness

Schedule:

Saturday 16 March at 17.00, sound waves will allow for unpredictable resonances and we will be introduced by music and Futurist poems.

At 18.00, the 11 participants will provide a film subject in two lines on a piece of paper that they’ll insert in a drawing hat. After accurately shaking the hat to ensure mixing of the subjects, the participants will randomly pick up their own assigned subject and will be ready to start working for the next 23 hours.

The day after, Sunday 17 March at 18.00, they will give their works to the juries; the eleven films will be screened and at the end, the juries will declare the winner and assign the prize.

The whole thing will take place at Sala Monterosso in Villa Redenta.

It will be a peculiar artistic experience, to create an unprecedented involvement between artist and spectator, expressive provocation and intellectual curiosity, to make the use of the artistic experimentation more enthralling, immediate and popular.

Please register not any later than 4 March 2019: artevia.spoleto@gmail.com

——————————————

Outside the routine of the professional artist, the GENIUS is ready to be awakened by an immediate, creative action, irrational, totally granted, without a seat belt. This is the futurist belief.
Soluble cinema is instantaneous cinema that dissolves. A film to conceive, act, shoot, edit and see in 24 hours. And immediately be destroyed. A small tribute to the Futurist cinema manifesto.
“Immediatism” means following the impulsive action and showing the true essence of genius. Applying immediate creative action to a complex and time-consuming technical practice like cinema is difficult. It requires elasticity, improvisation, freedom, ability, will, tenacity, preparation and courage. The analogy, the synthesis, the speed, the generosity and everything that gives life to the creative spark is the main ingredient of the process.
Futurism is and will always be a slap in the face of the judge, given by those who dream of doing.

Mezz’ora dopo la chiusura, the event by Sistema Museo, waits for you on Friday 22 March 2019 at 19.00 at Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive.

The theme of the meeting will be that unrepeatable experiment that was, in 1962, the exhibition Sculptures in the City. That event, which made Spoleto a protagonist in the world of contemporary art, will be narrated in particular through the many works recently donated to the Museum Carandente by Beverly Pepper, the American artist among the few women who participated in the exhibition.

The visit will be followed by an aperitive, thanks to the collaboration with Con Spoleto – the Spoleto hotel managers’ association.

Participation fee

Guided visit – Discounts € 5,00 for Spoleto Card holders
Aperitive – € 5,00

VISIONI D’AUTORE | Stefano Liberti presents his documentary SOYALISM @ Cinéma Sala Pegasus

Friday, March 29 at 21:00 | Cinéma Sala Pegasus
The director and journalist Stefano Liberti meets the audience of Spoleto for the presentation of the documentary SOYALISM.

The evening is a Visioni d’Autore special event, in collaboration with Coworking Spoleto

THE DOCUMENTARY
In an increasingly overpopulated world, in the grip of climate change, control of food production has become a huge business for a handful of a few giant companies. Following the pork production chain, from China to Brazil via the United States and Mozambique, the documentary describes the enormous movement of power concentration in the hands of these companies, which is taking hundreds of thousands of small producers out of business and permanently transforming entire landscapes. From intensive mega-breeding in China to the Amazon rainforest threatened by soybean crops developed to feed animals confined to sheds on the other side of the world, this process is undermining the social and environmental balances of the planet.
The film had its world premiere on November 18, 2018 at the International documentary film festival in Amsterdam.

STEFANO LIBERTI
Stefano Liberti is an Italian journalist and director. He directed the documentary “L’inferno dei bimbi stregoni” The hell of witch children, winner of L’Anello Debole award in 2010. He wrote “I signori del cibo. Viaggio nell’industria alimentare che sta distruggendo il pianeta” The Lords of food. A journey into the food industry that is destroying the planet (Minimum fax 2016).

Visioni d’Autore is organized by the City of Spoleto, MAIA Cultural Association and Cinéma Sala Pegasus.

presents

EKATERINA VORONA – DREAMSCAPE
by Gianluca Marziani

The first opening of the double exhibition of EKATERINA VORONA is scheduled for Thursday, February 14 at 18:30 in Rome at 28 PIAZZA DI PIETRA; the second will take place on Saturday, March 30 at 12:00 in Spoleto at PALAZZO COLLICOLA ARTI VISIVE. The two exhibitions are curated by Gianluca Marziani and have been organized in collaboration with Francesca Anfosso and Anna Vyazemsteva.

Palazzo Collicola Visual Arts continues its strategic research between cultures and geographical identities to define a wide-ranging close-up on contemporary painting. 2019 will see a focus on some Russian authors, starting in spring with the Moscow artist Ekaterina Vorona, who presents the results of the last five years of production. A clear figurative distillate of the aquatic landscape, a homogeneous vision that metabolizes the European research of the late nineteenth century with silent but significant conceptual shifts.

PALAZZO COLLICOLA ARTI VISIVE
There will be about forty works, all in large format, selected by the curator Gianluca Marziani. A homogeneous choice that enters the ambitious heart of Ekaterina Vorona’s painting, making the colours shine on the imposing walls of the museum. A production linked to the last five years of research, entirely documented in the catalogue, published by Carlo Cambi and accompanied by a critical analysis by the curator himself.

LET’S TALK ABOUT HERBS | Botany, Food, Medicine, Folklore @ Biblioteca "Montagne di Libri"
Apr 1 @ 21:30

LET’S TALK ABOUT HERBS.
Botany, Food, Medicine, Folklore
From 1 to 7 April 2019

The Mycological Group of the Spoleto Valley in collaboration with Zon@ambiente, organizes a workshop focusing on the knowledge, recognition and various uses of edible wild herbs. Since the mists of time, man has used these plants for food and healing purposes, as well as in other lesser-known contexts. In hostile historical periods, famines and conflicts, these plants have guaranteed the survival of entire populations with their nutritional value. The use of these spontaneous natural foods, combined with a simple cooking, allow the rediscovery of now forgotten tastes and flavors.

The following topics will be explored In the four meetings, which will take place in the hall of the library “Mountagne di libri” of Spoleto’s Comunità Montana (via dei Filosofi 89):

Monday, April 1, 8:30 p.m.: Hints and notions of Botany and Classification, aimed at the recognition of the main edible wild herbs comparing them with similar poisonous species.

Thursday, April 4, 8:45 p.m.: Wild edible herbs in cooking, with detailed explanations and practical demonstrations, exposing many delicious recipes, both classic and folkloric, also associated with local traditional, religious and civil contexts.

Friday, April 5, 8:45 pm: A journey through the Paleobotany, with the help of various fossil remains from various locations around the world, the most characteristic and significant plant forms that have followed one another in the long evolutionary journey of our planet. Hints of “Ethnobotany”, a cross-section of popular traditions, phytotherapeutic properties, magical and religious-divinatory rituals, historical aspects, uses in various human environments, popular beliefs and curiosities.

And finally, Sunday, April 7 starting at 9:00 am, the last day dedicated to a botanical excursion, aimed at the recognition and collection of edible wild herbs, followed by a welcome and lunch infusion with dishes based on wild herbs and food produced by the farmer that will host us, “Località il Piano”, in the hamlet of Paterno, Vallo di Nera (PG). Various activities will also be proposed: Educational Farm, milking, preparation and tasting of mozzarella, notions of gorgonzola production, guided tour of the farm, breeding of various animals etc.

<!--:it-->VISIONI D'AUTORE | Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli presenta il suo film LIKEMEBACK <!--:--><!--:en-->VISIONI D'AUTORE | Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli presents his movie LIKEMEBACK<!--:--> @ Cinéma Sala Pegasus

Wednesday, April 3 at 21:30, a new Visioni d’Autore event: Director Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli meets the audience of Spoleto for the presentation of the film LIKEMEBACK, presented at the 71st Locarno Festival in the Cineasti del Presente Section.

Visioni d’Autore is organized by Comune Di Spoleto, Associazione Culturale MAIA and Cinéma Sala Pegasus.

THE MOVIE
Lavinia, Carla and Danila have just finished high school and are leaving together for a sailing holiday. They are alone with their mobile phones and a skipper, travelling along the coasts of Croatia, full of dreams, freedom, carefreeness and unaware that sharing everything on social media will turn their holiday into a brutal rite of passage to adulthood where nothing, especially their friendship, will ever be as before.
Presented in the Cineasti del Presente section, it gained the attention of Locarno press and audience by recording sold out previews and two extra screenings. A particular work of research and experimentation has involved photography and sound; the original music was entrusted to Alva Noto, one of the most important sound artists in the world, nominated for an Oscar with Ryūichi Sakamoto for the soundtrack of The Revenant by A. G. Inarritu.

THE DIRECTOR
Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli began his artistic career as a musician with a degree in film scoring from the Berklee College of Music in 2007. In 2006 he shot his first short film, Meat and Sky, and founded the production company Essentia to support independent films such as The Wait (2013) by M. Blash and Jack and Diane (2012) by Bradley Rust Gray. In 2012 he graduated in screenwriting from the London Film School. In 2013 he wrote and directed his first feature-length film, Last Summer, which was presented at the Rome Film Festival in 2014 and received three awards and critical acclaim. In 2018, with the creative involvement of three young actresses, he wrote, directed and produced Likemeback. He is currently writing his next film, the adaptation of Alberto Moravia’s Gli indifferenti (1929).
