The exhibition The Hidden Theatre. A story in images is a collection of unpublished photographs dating back to the years of the discovery of the Roman Theatre of Spoleto and its unearthing, from 1938 to 1960.
The exhibition, promoted by the Polo Museale dell’Umbria – Museo Archeologico e Teatro Romano di Spoleto, in collaboration with Astra onlus and the Archivio di Stato di Perugia, section of Spoleto, shows photographs coming from the Accademia Etrusca di Cortona and from the archive of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell’Umbria. The exhibition reveals unpublished aspects of the discovery of the Roman theatre and the transformation of the complex of S.Agata from a judicial prison (1867-1957) to a museum.
The history of the monastery of S. Agata – already known thanks to the research of G. Curti, S. Di Sante Coaccioli, S. Gubbiotti, resulting in the 2011 documented book “The Roman Theatre and the former monastery of S.Agata. Chronicle of its transformations” – is now enriched by photographs taken by the then inspector archaeologist Umberto Ciotti, who documented every step of the demolition and excavation work.

PALAZZO COLLICOLA
Spoleto
Almost twenty years after its inauguration as the seat of the permanent collection of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Spoleto, dedicated to the figure of curator and art historian Giovanni Carandente (1920-2009), Palazzo Collicola starts a new chapter under the direction of art critic Marco Tonelli.
The collection was completely redesigned, brought to the second floor of the building and rearranged according to a new museum criterion, and enriched with educational facilities and works.
The starting point of the collection will be the strong presence of modern art in the city of Spoleto, to which some thematic rooms have been dedicated, starting with the one on the 1962 exhibition Sculptures in the city (participated by the most important sculptors of the time), through the various editions of the Spoleto Prize (1953-1968), and works by Pascali, Ceroli, Uncini, Moreni, Turcato, Morlotti, Vacchi, and the Group of 6 from Spoleto.
There is a consistent presence of 30 among sculptures and drawings by Leoncillo, born in Spoleto in 1915, from his initial period to the naturalistic, neo-Cubist and especially informal one, with emblematic works including Affinità patetiche, Pietà or Corpo dolente set up in the long and bright gallery at the second floor of the building.
The itinerary is composed of various rooms displaying works that will be periodically subject to rotation, includes sections dedicated to the Forma 1 group or to the Scuola di San Lorenzo, to abstract art (from Melotti to Biggi, Verna, Bendini and Asdrubali), to figuration (including Ontani, Di Stasio and Barni), with particular attention to works by modern sculptors such as Caro, Chadwick, Arnaldo and Giò Pomodoro, Franchina and Cuschera.
Also important is the presence of works by conceptual artists such as Dibbets, Mochetti, Patella, Garutti and above all Sol Lewitt, who lived in Spoleto and in 2000 created the spectacular walldrawing Band of Color n.951 in Palazzo Collicola.
Alexander Calder (present with mobiles, wire sculptures and gouaches) and Beverly Pepper, especially in light of their relationship with Carandente (to whose donation we owe, among other things, a large part of the collection, that also includes the acquisitions of the Premio Spoleto, and bequests of artists and individuals), have their own sections, which significantly open and close the exhibition.
On the occasion of the re-design, the collection has been enriched with new works, including Gianni Asdrubali, Gastone Biggi, Stefano Di Stasio, Paola Gandolfi, Leoncillo, Francesco Lo Savio, Afranio Metelli, Nunzio, Pizzi Cannella and Francesco Somaini.
The three inner rooms of the Gallery are dedicated to drawings and graphic works by Leoncillo and Burri, by Italian artists (including Guttuso, Melotti, Raphael, Lo Savio, Gnoli, Accardi, Capogrossi) and foreign artists (including David Smith, Chillida, Scarpitta, Moore, Chadwick).
Finally, the nucleus of about 100 photographs by Ugo Mulas taken in 1962 during the exhibition Sculture nella città (Sculptures in the City) is important, works that, due to the delicacy of the supports, will be exhibited following periodic rotations.
SIDE EVENTS
Loris Cecchini: Hypermeasures
The new setting of the Spoleto Modern Art Gallery will be accompanied by two temporary interventions designed specifically for this occasion and for the external and internal spaces of Palazzo Collicola.
The first of the two is Loris Cecchini’s Hypermeasures, a special base in front of the museum entrance with a sculpture built with modules of light metal, while inside the gallery at the Piano Nobile three sculptures made with the same principle of the Alfa Alfa and Waterbones series will be suspended, linking the mechanical and technological naturalness of these ramifications and rhizomatic hyperfetations with the floral motifs of the gallery’s frescoes, typical of the so-called Spoleto baroque of the early XVIII century.
With the support of the Galleria Continua (San Gimignano/Bejing/LesMoulins/Habana)
Bruno Ceccobelli: MarmoriiMarmorei
In the fifteen rooms of the gallery at the Piano Nobile, Bruno Ceccobelli has also created a route consisting of sculptures in marble and stone, a sort of journey entitled MarmoriiMarmorei, which invites visitors to cross the rooms and meditate on the sense of Fortune and its circularity. The very symbolism of the works and the route (with a beginning and a point of return following the same itinerary), the presence of fragmentary sculptures that seem to be finds and discoveries, are proposed as an initiatory journey and clue in search of meanings and truths, which can never be given in an absolute and clear sense, but evocative and spiritual.
With the support of the company “I Sassi” from Assisi.

The project was started by freelance journalist Valentina Tatti Tonni who involved citizens, associations, a cultural centre and a library in a non-political frame, to try and return value to the people and to establish the centrality of culture, listening, dialogue. Especially in he present historical period it is crucial that everyone claim and retake their rights, their duties and the universal values in mutual respect.
Art will start the agenda; two exhibitions will open on Friday 18 October 2019, that will remain accessible throughout 19 and 20 October: Visionarie, at 17 at the Sala Frau dedicated to “iconic female figures” by Maura Coltorti, and Saudade, at 18 at the Urban Center dedicated to photography and emotions.
At 18, two experiential workshops will be opened: at the Coworking in via del Mercato Matteo Papini will lead children and adults to philosophy practicing, while Elisa Petrini at CittadinanzAttiva will do the same along artistic/expressive lines. The opening day will end with the film projection “A mano disarmata” at 21.30 at the Sala Frau (ticket: 5 €), based on the book written by Repubblica journalist Federica Angeli who lives under protection following the threats received from the mafia.
The Festivasl’s second day, Saturday 19 October, will offer the chance to delve into themes taken from current events, in three conventions. At 10 by the State Archives’ local section, there will be the first one on Liberty of Information.
The second one will be at 15.30 at the Sala Frau and is dedicated to the environment, pollution and mafia clans.
At 18 at the Coworking, Adelaide Coletti, Barbara Curti and Laura Guercio will take part in a panel dedicated to gender stereotypes, prejudices and the civil rights of women, to be moderated by Matteo Papini and Samuele Miraggio.
At 21 at the Urban Center it’s time for some music with Quintetto degli Ottoni “Girolamo Fantini” and an after-dinner (10 euro) upon reservation.
The Festival’s final day, Sunday 20 October, will start at 9 at Bar Tebro, with Matteo Papini and his Caffè Filosofico. At 15.30 by the Centro Pastorale Giovanile a theatre, musical, folk show by the Romanian Community, association Ziua Unirii. At 18.30 at the Sala Frau, Marina Antonini in “…anche se sei piegata dal vento” dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. by and with Maria Anna Stella
Teatro Caio Melisso
Saturday 26 October 2019 at 21.00
Between 2016 and 2017, in the aftermath of the earthquake, she collected audio/video material around Norcia for the cycle of radio broadcasts “Tre Soldi”, broadcast by RAI in autumn 2017, the most interesting of which was subsequently dramaturgically developed the following year, to create a unique performance event of its kind.
The results of her research and the testimonies collected in the form of a confession in months of activity on ‘internal seismicity’ have been assembled according to a very personal artistic path, making use of the dramaturgical advice of the artistic director of the C.U.T. Roberto Ruggieri. These materials came together to outline an anthology of confessions – a sort of Spoon River Anthology in free verse – elaborated almost in the form of an epitaph, concerning the lives of some residents in the town of Norcia and its surroundings, part of which are now buried in the local cemetery . Those narrated by Maria Anna Stella are life stories of a microcosm lost in the Apennines and of a present time already eternally passed away. In her neat and gaudy performance, Maria Anna Stella managed to give back to the characters their own voice, with personal gestures and postures, without rants and pantomimes, according to a style that can bring to mind the storyteller technique of Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo .
Her aim is also to free the theatre from the narrow confines of the representation of literary works so that it finds its own social and spiritual utility by reconnecting to vital processes, to the truth of life in its flow, returning to being the place where reality itself is examined in its reality.

DOLCENERA Live 2019
Anteprima del tour
Dolcenera’s artistic path starts in 2003 when she ranked first among the young people competing at the 53rd edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Siamo tutti là fuori”, winning also the prize assigned by the Press Room, Radio and TV. The song would then be included in her first album “Sorriso Nucleare” published in the same year. The Sanremese success is followed by an intense period of promotion that brings Emanuela (this is Dolcenera’s real name) to perform all over Italy from Piazza San Pietro for the “Concert in the Vatican” at the Casal del Marmo juvenile prison in Rome where she sang for the inmates.
In 2005 she participated in and won the music broadcast “Music Farm” (Raidue) with the song “Mai piu noi due” which will be included in her second album “Un Mondo Perfetto” (platinum record with over 150,000 copies sold that will remain in the ranking for a year) followed by a “Special Edition” of the album “Un Mondo Perfetto” with a live DVD where she duets with Claudio Baglioni and Loredana Bertè. 2005 ends with a positive balance for this young Salentine singer-songwriter who wins several awards during the year, including the Premio De Andrè, the prize for “Best emerging artist” at M.E.I. and the Silver Lion as “Musical Revelation of the Year”.
The following year opens with the publication of “Dolcenera canta il cinema” (February 2006), an album made exclusively for 20th Century Fox in which she reinterprets the most beautiful songs of American cinema. Still in the same year, Dolcenera decides to participate in the Sanremo Festival again and presents the song “Com’è straordinaria la vita”, then publishes her third album, “Il popolo dei Sogni”, an album that gets gold in a week and then platinum. Other awards follow (“The best voice” at the “Venice Music Awards” and a UNICEF testimonial for the global campaign “United for children, United against AIDS”), and the year goes on among concerts and the publication in Germany, Austria and Switzerland of her album “Un mondo Perfetto”.
Sales success in Germany led her to start in 2007 a two-month tour across the main German cities, a tour that ends with the publication of the new edition of the German album “Un Mondo Perfetto – Tour Edition”, with different live versions.
In 2007 she’s also involved in cinema: she signs and sings “In fondo alla notte” for the movie “La notte del mio primo amore”, readapted in Italian and interprets “Mon Amour” and “Sei tu”, for the film French “Finchè nozze non ci separino” (winner of the MIFF – Milan Film Festival) and participates as an actress in the film “Scrivilo sui muri” with Cristiana Capotondi and Primo Reggiani directed by Giancarlo Scarchilli.
The following year she undertakes a long European tour: she performed in the Deutches Theater of Monaco, at the Grand Arche à la Defense in Paris, opened the Zucchero concerts in Austria, took part in the Carthage International Music Festival in Tunis and in Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain. Moreover, on the occasion of the opening of the largest rock museum in Germany (which also dedicates a space to her), she plays at the Olympiastadion. She also opens Vasco Rossi’s concerts at the Conero Stadium in Ancona.
2009 is an important year for Dolcenera. After participating in the 59th edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Il mio amore unico”, she publishes “Dolcenera nel paese delle meraviglie”.
The song debuts in first place in sales and in radio airplay and for more than three months it remains in the Top 20 of the most popular radio broadcasts. In addition to being awarded by the Lunezia Award commission for the literal-musical value, “Il mio amore unico” is included in the film “Amore 14” by Federico Moccia, which also received acclaim abroad: it is transmitted both by English radios (in the version remix), both in South America in the Spanish adaptation entitled “Único” interpreted by Alejandra Guzman.
Even the second and third single taken from the album “Dolcenera nel paese delle meraviglie” became radio hits, so much so that it brought it to the “Top Radio” award of the “Venice Music Awards 2009”. The year continues with a very long tour in Italy (including the opening of the Depeche Mode world tour show at the San Siro stadium in Milan) and abroad (participates in the “Great Wide Open” Rock Festival in Mühldorf am Inn in Germany, along with Deep Purple, Status Quo and other international artists).
In 2010, after years spent studying piano and clarinet, Dolcenera let herself be fascinated by the drums, so much so that the writing of the her new songs arose from drum-and-bass rhythmic designs. This is the starting point of her new album “Evolution of the species”, released May 17, 2011 on the K6DN label – Emi Music Italy. Written and arranged by Dolcenera herself, the album uses many collaborations and represents her new courageous artistic and musical journey, characterized by an acoustic pop-rock sound dominated by rhythm with electronic elements.

On Friday 8 November 2019 at 17.00 by the Hall of Honor in Palazzo Leti Sansi (Via Arco di Druso) RAI journalist and writer Giancarlo Trapanese presents his latest book entitled Obsolescente published by Italic Pequod. The novel is set mostly in the province of Perugia and deals with topical issues.
Scheduled obsolescence – Retired 75-year-old Perugian engineer Inna, a failed American marriage behind his shoulders, reflects on the meaning of a life devoid of affection and perspectives; a bit misogynistic and grumpy, was perhaps the world’s greatest expert on “planned obsolescence”, IT sector in ever-increasing development, that unsoundly imposes a deadline over the functioning of mobile phones, computers and many other devices by making them fail after a given period, to allow high production rates and employment levels. A life spent “spoiling” instead of “building” till destiny finally offers him a dramatic challenge with his past and his present, a challenge that will change his own lifeviews.
The conference will be attended by the president of the Order of Journalists of Umbria, Roberto Conticelli, and chaired by Dario Pompili, president of the Amici di Spoleto Association. Institutional greetings: Umberto De Augustinis, mayor of Spoleto; Beatrice Montioni, Councilor for Education of the City of Spoleto.
The “Walter Tobagi” preparatory journalism course was launched in 2005 to commemorate the figure of the journalist of the Corriere della Sera Walter Tobagi, born in San Brizio di Spoleto and killed in Milan in 1980 by the Red Brigades. The edition that will take place during this school year will coincide with the 40th anniversary of Tobagi’s death.

The theatre-for-families festival La Domenica dei Sogni, conceived to offer the families the magic of the world of theatre, returns for its 12th edition.
The 2019-2020 programme includes five new shows at the Teatro Nuovo Menotti, on Sundays at 16.30, attentively chosen from the repertoires of the best Italian companies.
This year the first two scheduled showws are free, thanks to the project “Arriva il teatro!”, promoted by Fontemaggiore, Mibact and Regione Umbria, to re-establish a cultural offer in the areas struck by the 2016 earthquake in central Italy, to enhance social interaction, tourist promotion and the visibility of the cultural and environmental heritage.
But there are also confirmations along with the many new features, ie the renewed collaboration with Fontemaggiore, one of the most recognized and appreciated family theatre companies to which we owe the first two shows, and with the “Library goes to Theatre” project, which involves the loan of books as a further possibility of deepening all those emotions and suggestions experienced on the scene, in a fertile encounter between languages and arts.
The season opens Sunday 17 November with Mago per Svago by l’Abile Teatro, that was awarded at the Festival Clown&Clown in Monte San Giusto in 2018 and at the Milano Clown Festival 2018.
FREE ADMISSION
On 1 December it is the turn of Scarpette Strette by Luna e GNAC Teatro, awarded at the Festival di Ribalta 2010, finalist at the Festival Fit in Lugano (CH), 2009 and finalist at the Festival La Rosa d’Oro in Padua, 2009.
FREE ADMISSION
On 26 January, Becco di Rame by Teatro del Buratto, which received the EOLO Award in 2018.
On 2 February it is the time for Più veloce di un raglio by CDT Cada die Teatro, also winner of an EOLO Award in 2015, Premio Padova – Amici di Emanuele Luzzati and Premjo Rosa d’Oro 2015.
The last appointment is for 22 March with L’ultimo T-Rex era un Bullo by Compagnia Gli Alcuni-Teatro.
