Accade d’estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS @ Spoleto
Aug 23 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Some seventy appointments in less than two months including theatre, music, readings and art: this is the new programme of events that we have put together with the city’s associations and cultural institutions. It is a series of proposals that, in addition to accompanying us until September, aim to involve the historic centre of Spoleto with its theatres, museums and the beauty of its scenic spaces, the ideal setting for concerts, theatrical performances and, more generally, the cultural initiatives on the programme, but also the villages of our vast, marvellous territory so that participation in the various appointments can also be an opportunity to discover enchanting, if sometimes lesser-known, places and spaces.
The programme brings together the artistic proposals of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, La Mama Umbria, and our city library with those of the Festival delle Regioni, the Italian Federation of Amateur Theatre, and the Spoleto Back Beat, Opera Prima, Spoleto Social Sport and Amici delle Miniere associations, in addition to the theatrical and musical events that we will host at Spazio Collicola.
‘Accade d’estate a Spoleto’ thus gives a coherent image of the city’s cultural activism, with productions and artistic proposals capable of enhancing the programme of events scheduled over the next two months. The hope, as always, is to succeed in arousing interest and curiosity, a desire to share and participate in the events.

Mayor Andrea Sisti                                        Councillor Danilo Chiodetti

Exhibition | ATTOLICO COLLECTION: an Italian look @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 24 all-day

ATTOLICO COLLECTION: an Italian look
Palazzo Collicola, Spoleto

25 June to 25 September 2022
Opening 24 June at 17.00

The Attolico Collection, the result of decades of acquisitions of works first by Tommaso Lucherini (1891-1967) and then by his daughter Bianca Attolico (1931-2020), consists of approximately 500 works including sculptures and paintings ranging from artists of the 1920s (de Chirico, Balla, Sironi, Pirandello, Morandi, Mafai) to Neoavantgarde artists (Schifano, Pascali, De Dominicis, Manzoni, Mattiacci, Boetti, Mauri), Arte Povera (Calzolari, Kounellis), up to conceptual artists (Kosuth, LeWitt, Agnetti, Mochetti), exponents of the San Lorenzo School (Ceccobelli, Bianchi, Dessì, Nunzio, Gallo) or protagonists of our days (Kentridge, Sierra, Vezzoli, Muniz, Cattelan, Beecroft), just to name a few.

Already temporarily exhibited in public spaces in the past, following the formalisation of a loan agreement between the Municipality of Spoleto and Elena and Lorenzo Attolico (Bianca’s children and current managers of the collection, Elena also being the President of the Friends of Palazzo Collicola), part of the collection will now be housed in Palazzo Collicola in some rooms along the route of the ‘G. Carandente’ Gallery of Modern Art in Spoleto.

For its inauguration, a nucleus of works by important Italian artists not present in the museum’s permanent collection was selected, in agreement with the museum’s Director, Marco Tonelli, and thanks to the critical apparatus by Lorenzo Fiorucci and Davide Silvioli, tracing a synthetic and illustrative path of Italian art from the mid-1950s to the present day. By means of works by 11 artists (Burri, Castellani, Manzoni, Alviani, Agnetti, De Dominicis, Kounellis, Schifano, Vezzoli, Campanini and Arienti), the intention was to construct, without obviously philological aims but as exemplary cases, a path of modernity, innovation and experimentation that constituted the best Italian research in the artistic sphere, almost as if to form a multiform but equally eccentric and visionary gaze on the part of artists who are historicised or, as they are still living, undoubtedly destined to be so.

Of each of the selected artists, works have been chosen that can represent them in an unambiguous way, that is, according to those formal and linguistic traits that have distinguished their poetics despite the different styles, materials and periods in the course of their activity.

A true collection within a collection, therefore, that ideally covers, with works created between 1965 and 2002, the physiological “lacks” of the Gallery of Modern Art of Spoleto and that at the same time allows us to review works by protagonists of modern and contemporary Italian art, placed in a historical continuity and comparison with the works in the permanent collection of Spoleto, including Leoncillo, Pascali, Ceroli, Accardi, Griffa, Lo Savio, Mochetti, LeWitt, Calder, Pepper, Moore, Caro, David Smith.

EM Library. Books and documents from Eliseo Mattiacci’s studio

Palazzo Collicola – Spoleto
25 June– 25 September 2022

a project by
Studio Eliseo Mattiacci

curated by
Riccardo Tonti Bandini

Sculptor Eliseo Mattiacci‘s archive and inspirations take shape in an exhibition and in the digital spaces of Instagram in the EMLibrary (Eliseo Mattiacci Library) project, developed by Studio Eliseo Mattiacci and exhibited at the Carandente Library.

Each section in the exhibition delves into a theme, entrusted to a different author who conveys the free associations between books and the sculptor’s work. Short teaser videos made by Marco Morici, with sound composed by Edoardo Rossano, summarize the iconographic kaleidoscope of each core. The “bibliography,” usually relegated to a background appendix, becomes the primary tool for investigating the work. Each theme, in addition to the books, carries with it a core of documents, notes, and images found within the books and “adjacent” to the theme. Generally, the critic is invited to write about a work or exhibition, and then the artist’s iconographic references are traced back. In this project the sense is reversed, the books become the window through which to look at the work.

FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light
curated by Marco Tonelli

Palazzo Collicola, Spoleto
25 June – 25 September 2022
Opening 24 June at 17.00

Since the 1980s, Fabrizio Plessi has been experimentally and pioneeringly anticipating uses of the digital set design now widespread, and has created numerous electronic sets for television, theatre, contemporary dance or as stand-alone shows, including those of the trilogy of choreographer and director Frédéric Flamand’s The Fall of Icarus (1989), Titanic (1992) and Ex machina (1994), as well as Pirandello’s Dress the Undressed (2010), Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (2006) and Fenix DNA installed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (2017).

The exhibition at Palazzo Collicola, realised in collaboration with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (which first exhibited the electronic scenes of the trilogy at the Magazzini del Sale in March 2022), presents a digital reconstruction of the 6 most engaging and innovative electronic sets among the many realised in Plessi’s career, through films, photos, projects, drawings and notes by the artist, which projected onto as many reconstructions of monumental wooden and digital books flow like pages of memories and fantastic tales.

If the trilogy choreographed by Flamand metaphorically expresses the tensions, anxieties and catastrophes of contemporaneity, increasingly dependent on media and digital instrumentation, the theatre of Pirandello (transmitted on stage, together with the actors by monitor images) and Shakespeare (with costumes and high-speed helmets) has been revisited by Plessi with highly innovative and futuristic scenic installations, triggering suggestions that make them true works of total art, following the idea that the artist has been experimenting with since 1987 with the large installation Roma presented at Documenta in Kassel. It is Fenix DNA, an immersive work, dedicated to the rebirth of the Phoenix, that ideally closes the circle, staging the same primary and natural elements of the artist’s poetics, including fire, water and lightning. The large digital pages projected on monumental wooden books, with more than two hundred images inside them, immersed in the darkness of the rooms on the ground floor of Palazzo Collicola, in their flowing as if moved by the wind, give a sense of the design of the theatre works, revealing the very workshop of the artist’s creativity in its phases of gestation, inspiration, euphoria, fantasy and visionary spirit, demonstrating that the creative principle of the artist is still the sign that the hand traces on the sheet of paper.

Almost as if to tell us that at bottom the most intimate structure of Plessi’s work communicates and romantically stages, as in a dream that has never been interrupted, his instinctive passion for theatricality and the spectacular magic of art.

The exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of the Fondazione Marignoli di Montecorona and “Amici di Palazzo Collicola” association.

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 24 all-day

RezzaMastrella: Euforia Carogna
Curated by Flavia Mastrella and Marco Tonelli

Palazzo Collicola, Spoleto
25 June – 25 September 2022
Opening 24 June 5 pm

A habitat of interactive sculptures, a documentary exhibition, an evolutionary path, a stage set, videos and photographs: this is Euforia Carogna, a project specifically conceived for the spaces of Palazzo Collicola and realised also thanks to the contribution of the Festival dei Due Mondi, in which Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella will take part with the performance Porte.

An exhibition with two artists/performers/writers/directors whose language moves between desecration and criticism, word and neurosis, form and experimentation, hybridising sound, noise, object, body in a continuous metamorphosis often taken to the limits of ‘cruelty’. As they themselves wrote for the occasion: “Having thirty-five years of work behind us and knowing that there will probably not be another thirty-five ahead of us would throw anyone into despair. But since it is us, we accept the verdict of time trusting to disprove it, because to experience freedom without the need to idealise it, is an opportunity that does not fear the uncertainty of the future’.

Euforia Carogna is in itself a ‘monstrum’ exhibition, that is to say a prodigy, which announces itself right from the museum’s entrance staircase and swaggering into the austere and noble spaces of Palazzo Collicola and its collection of paintings, mirrors, tapestries, wall paintings and antique furnishings, where history observes contemporaneity through the severe or passionate gazes of cardinals, saints, madonnas, martyrs, hanging on the walls of the Hall of Honour, the Chapel and all the 15 rooms in which the exhibition winds its way, culminating in a large installation, threadlike and transparent, suspended along the Painted Gallery.

The exhibition itself presents itself as one big performance, in which cycles of stage sculptures used in Fotofinish, blow-ups taken from some theatrical performances, books on wheels and handmade, Pictures of Light, Stage Paintings, Juggling Cards, Faces…Goths, musical instruments, fabric sculptures on mirrored sheets animate the space like fragile and impertinent intruders, while in some rooms videos, film fragments, theatrical actions and voices such as The Cry of the Centaur are projected. A sort of vain party of works and images, costumes and small habitats, inviting the spectator to participate, to touch, to play the creative and uninhibited game to which Rezza gives voice and body and Mastrella support and structure. Perfect balance between order and chaos, rigour and improvisation, RezzaMastrella’s habitat and stage machine are capable of invading space and being invaded by the audience, of soliciting and being solicited by our reactions. Inside the museum of Palazzo Collicola, their works thus take on the features of a true form of autonomous life, a pulsating organ, a creative anarchy planned down to the smallest detail.

The exhibition was also made possible thanks to the contribution of the Festival dei Due Mondi and the Sardegna Film Commission.

Accade d’estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS @ Spoleto
Aug 25 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 25 all-day

Opening hours Palazzo Collicola:

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 25 all-day

Aug 26 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 26 all-day

Opening hours:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Opening times:
from Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 26 all-day

Aug 26 all-day

Aug 27 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 27 all-day

Opening hours:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Opening times:
from Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 27 all-day

Opening hours Palazzo Collicola:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 27 all-day

Aug 28 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 28 all-day

Opening times:
from Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 28 all-day

Opening hours Palazzo Collicola:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 28 all-day

Aug 29 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 29 all-day

Opening times:
from Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 29 all-day

Opening hours Palazzo Collicola:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 29 all-day

Aug 30 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Accade d’estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS @ Spoleto
Aug 31 all-day
<!--:it-->ACCADE D'ESTATE A SPOLETO | Il programma completo<!--:--><!--:en-->Accade d'estate a Spoleto | SPOLETO SUMMER EVENTS<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Aug 31 all-day

Opening times:
from Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | FABRIZIO PLESSI: pages of light @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 31 all-day

Opening hours Palazzo Collicola:
Wednesday to Monday 10.30-13.00 / 15.30-19.00

Exhibition | REZZAMASTRELLA: Euforia Carogna @ Palazzo Collicola
Aug 31 all-day
