ORATORIO DELLA RESURREZIONE
Address
Piazza Garibaldi
Description
The oratorio della Resurrezione is a wide, Roman-style hall in the complex of San Gregorio maggiore. The decorations, the great Resurrection on the vault and the 14 Tales of Resurrection date all to 1593 and are by painter Pierino Cesarei. Each episode has a learned caption, following the indications of the Council of Trent, that aimed at revitalizing and spreading christian contents.
Bishop Paolo Sanvitale directly commissioned the theme and the iconographic program to his collaborator Decio Gelosi, prior of the Collegiata di San Gregorio; the twos shared the love for art and antiquity.

SACELLO AI DECORATI AL VALORE DI SPOLETO, EX CASERMA MINERVIO
Address
Piazza Garibaldi
Description
The sacellum is little known, even among Spoletans, because placed in a restricted monumental complex in need of major restoration, the area of the Roman Amphitheatre. During the Middle Ages the complex served as monastery, and in the mid-XIXth century it was expropriated by the newly-born Kingdom of Italy, and served as barracks. After WWI, what was likely the apse of the church of SS. Stefano and Tommaso, was arranged to be turned into War Memorial. Names of fallen soldiers who received a badge of honour appear on its walls in fact, and the whole is decorated by wall paintings showing rural scenes, such as the representation of the seasons featuring their related agricultural activities. The sacellum was inaugurated on 4 November 1925, as testified to by a painted cartouche.

The FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian Environment Fund) holds it as one of the most important places among the ones included in the list of extraordinary openings on the occasion of the 2017 Spring Days of FAI: the Santo Chiodo Cultural Heritage depot, which will be exceptionally visitable on 26 March, 2017.
Conceived after the 1997 seismic swarm and finished by 2008, it was created to give Spoleto an anti-seismic structure to store works of art endangered by prospective similar future events, and at present it keeps 5000 works and boxes with archaeological material coming from the Valnerina. A laboratory is active inside, operated by restorers of the Florentine Opificio delle pietre dure. Its visit allows to fully appreciate our great cultural Heritage, understand the work by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Assets, by law-enforcement agencies, Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, and experience the passion and competence at the service of the areas wounded by the seism, to return the signs of their identity.
The visits will be led by students of the “Pontano – Sansi – Leonardi” school in Spoleto. Accesses will be organized on a group basis, maximum 10 pp per group, every 15 minutes, from 10.00 to 17.30. Access will be allowed upon presentation of one’s identity document. The depot is equipped with a surveillance system.
Contributions of at least 2,00 € are encouraged, but not compulsory, and will be gratefully accepted. In case of huge mass attendance, entrances may be closed before scheduled closing time.
The depot is located close to the well signalled Civil Protection Operative Centre (COC – COM), the Santo Chiodo Industrial Area is along the road from Spoleto to Acquasparta (SS 418). Coming from Spoleto, at the big roundabout of Santo Chiodo turn to the right. After 200 m, at another, much smaller roundabout, go straight ahead and (you’re in via dei Tessili now) drive on for half a mile about. The depot is shortly after the COC – COM Civil Protection Operative Centre, on the right, in via dei Tessili.
