A comic show of theatre, music and dance
Friday, August 2 at 21 | TEATRO CAIO MELISSO
Amatores is a whirlwind of classic comedy that unfolds between hilarious duets, live songs and original choreographies. All immersed in the mythical context of Ancient Rome. A return to the now almost disappeared “performing theatre” in which the characters, as in the best tradition of Italian musical comedy, alternate acting to singing, while sweet female figures twirl around marking the time of an ironically conflictual and tragically comic love.
The ancient world that we evoke in Amatores – from the nascent Rome to the imperial era – helps us, with its carefree simplicity, to know better ourselves and our identity, raped by “this age of madness” that has buried love under piles of paranoia, volumes of psychoanalysis and too much indifference. The direction marries simplicity and chooses a deliberately over-the-top acting for insanely two-dimensional characters, flanking Romolo and Numa Pompilio, Mozart’s arias and eternal characters of Molièrian memory, according to a style of contamination of genres and eras that is no longer a taboo for contemporary theater.
The director of the show is Riccardo Leonelli, an actor known for his television appearances in various TV dramas (Il Paradiso delle Signore, Luisa Spagnoli, Una pallottola nel cuore, Un passo dal cielo, Centovetrine) and soon among the new protagonists of Don Matteo 12. He will be joined by the actors-singer Stefano de Majo, Mariavittoria Cozzella, Damiano Angelucci, Elena Longaroni and the dancers Emanuela Cassetti, Francesca Passini and Mia Venezi. The choreographies are curated by the award-winning Romana Sciarretta. Music is by the pianist and composer Alessandro De Florio.

The Rocca Albornoz – National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto will host, Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 18:00, Woman, per qual virtude. Sacred and profane love in the Middle Ages.
A concert by the Cantoria Mevaniae: a choral group accompanied by musicians, which studies and interprets the monodic and polyphonic repertoires of medieval and pre-Renaissance music.
Since the dawn of civilization, until the Renaissance, there has never been a clear boundary between sacred and profane, that is, between ecclesiastical practices and popular ones, indeed the trespassing from one to the other is very common.
The development of sacred music, which perfectly follows the story of Catholic Church, underwent important changes from the end of the Roman Empire, changes that became definitive with the penitential and Franciscan movements and the vernacular language as the fastest and most incisive means of communication.
Ecclesiastical rites and ceremonies left the churches and convents to open up to people’s understanding, developing new ideas of painting, literature and music. It was the great humanistic revolution of the Middle Ages. Brotherhoods and lay movements, together with pilgrimages and the great phenomena of popular devotion, became the ideal place to develop new forms of art.
Alongside the paintings with great themes elaborated by the Bible and the apocryphal Gospels, the practice of camouflage, consisting in replacing the text of a profane composition with a sacred text, or vice versa, with the same melody, became rather widespread in music, something that was not considered blasphemous by anyone, although to us, today, it may seem so.
The use of profane themes in large sacred compositions, such as masses, was also common. Paraliturgical forms of popular singing were developed with the figure of Mary Mother of Jesus at the center, idealized as the perfect creature, capable of being understood in heaven as on earth. No less important is the use, in courts and musical chapels, of popular and sacred melodies to sing the Courtly love for the ideal woman.
The great paraliturgical traditions were born in that period and they are still alive today in the most conservative populations, in which the border between the sacred and the profane is still very blurred.
Cantoria Mevaniae is composed of Lorenzo Lolli, singing, psaltery, portable organ, percussions, and Mario Lolli, lute, ud, guitar, singing.
Conductor: Elga Ciancaleoni.

73rd SEASON OF THE EXPERIMENTAL OPERA THEATRE IN SPOLETO
Caio Melisso Theatre
EINE KLEINE MUSIK: ESPAÑA
Music Preview of the Opera Season
This year, after focusing on France in 2018, the festival will focus on Spain. A series of pieces on music by de Falla, Villa Lobos, Piazzolla and Albeniz, interspersed with the reading of poems by Antonio Machado will be the prologue to the staging of EL RETABLO DE MAESE PEDRO by Manuel de Falla, in the transcription for piano and voices by the author (ed.1934). Mariachiara Grilli will conduct and play the piano, the direction will be in charge of Alessio Pizzech, already known at the Sperimentale. The stage set will be curated by Andrea Stanisci, who will also sign the scenes for Re di Donne and later for Il Barbiere di Siviglia. El retablo de Maese Pedro is rarely staged in Italy and was for the author a way to refer to a national tradition, composed with a strict criterion. The libretto is taken from the original text of Cervantes, lightening the pieces in a suitable way. For the director Pizzech: “Don Quixote will be an artist who confronts with himself and his art. A “madness” conceived together with Stanisci between figurative art, music and theatre”.

73rd SEASON OF THE EXPERIMENTAL OPERA THEATRE IN SPOLETO
Caio Melisso Theatre
RE DI DONNE (WOMEN’S KING)
Absolute first execution
Chamber opera in five scenes for 4 singers, instrumental and electronic ensemble to a libretto by Cristina Battocletti and music by John Palmer.
The opera was specially commissioned by the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto.
“The theme is feminicide, which is explored within a fatal triangle that will lead to the final tragedy. The characters’ different psychological aspects are treated in a musical dialectic where the singers’ dialogues are also the instruments’ dialogues. Word and sound become two aspects of the same human dimension” (John Palmer). Moreover, says director Pizzech: “The scenic design conceived with Stanisci is based on the body not as an element of sacredness, not as an important element of the individual, but as “the image”, which determines violent impulses and intentions: possess without love. Costumes by Clelia De Angelis.
