<!--:it-->Festival Free Wor(l)d per la Libertà di Espressione<!--:--><!--:en-->Festival Free Wor(l)d for the Freedom of Expression<!--:--> @ Spoleto

Spoleto, 18 – 20 October 2019 first edition
The first edition of Festival Free Wor(l)d for the Freedom of Expression will start in Spoleto Friday 18 October 2019, and will go on for the whole weekend in various spots of the city. Three successful days (OFF/Fuori Festival) anticipated this event, one dedicated to the value of word featuring poetry and music (22 Sept), one dedicate to art. 9 if the Italian Constitution and to  Peppino Impastato (27 Sept) and one focusing on the historical memory and dedicated to Rosa Luxemburg (5 Oct).
The project was started by freelance journalist Valentina Tatti Tonni who involved citizens, associations, a cultural centre and a library in a non-political frame, to try and return value to the people and to establish the centrality of culture, listening, dialogue. Especially in he present historical period it is crucial that everyone claim and retake their rights, their duties and the universal values in mutual respect.

Art will start the agenda; two exhibitions will open on Friday 18 October 2019, that will remain accessible throughout 19 and 20 October:  Visionarie, at 17 at the Sala Frau dedicated to “iconic female figures” by Maura Coltorti, and Saudade, at 18 at the Urban Center dedicated to photography and emotions.

At 18, two experiential workshops will be opened: at the Coworking in via del Mercato Matteo Papini will lead children and adults to philosophy practicing, while Elisa Petrini at CittadinanzAttiva will do the same along artistic/expressive lines. The opening day will end with the film projection “A mano disarmata” at 21.30 at the Sala Frau (ticket: 5 €), based on the book written by Repubblica journalist Federica Angeli who lives under protection following the threats received from the mafia.

The Festivasl’s second day, Saturday 19 October, will offer the chance to delve into themes taken from current events, in three conventions. At 10 by the State Archives’ local section, there will be the first one on Liberty of Information.

The second one will be at 15.30 at the Sala Frau and is dedicated to the environment, pollution and mafia clans.

At 18 at the Coworking, Adelaide Coletti, Barbara Curti and Laura Guercio will take part in a panel dedicated to gender stereotypes, prejudices and the civil rights of women, to be moderated by Matteo Papini and Samuele Miraggio.

At 21 at the Urban Center it’s time for some music with Quintetto degli Ottoni “Girolamo Fantini” and an after-dinner (10 euro) upon reservation.

The Festival’s final day, Sunday 20 October, will start at 9 at Bar Tebro, with Matteo Papini and his Caffè Filosofico. TERRAE MOTUS/MOTUS ANIMAE by and with Maria Anna Stella @ Teatro Caio Melisso - Spazio Carla Fendi

TERRAE MOTUS/MOTUS ANIMAE
by and with Maria Anna Stella

Teatro Caio Melisso
Saturday 26 October 2019 at 21.00
The performance Terrae Motus/Motus Animae was conceived by Maria Anna Stella, born and living in Norcia, by the C.U.T Centro Universitario Teatrale di Perugia, with which she has been collaborating for six years after graduating in Performative Theatre Techniques and Scenic Writing.

Between 2016 and 2017, in the aftermath of the earthquake, she collected audio/video material around Norcia for the cycle of radio broadcasts “Tre Soldi”, broadcast by RAI in autumn 2017, the most interesting  of which was subsequently dramaturgically developed the following year, to create a unique performance event of its kind.

The results of her research and the testimonies collected in the form of a confession in months of activity on ‘internal seismicity’ have been assembled according to a very personal artistic path, making use of the dramaturgical advice of the artistic director of the C.U.T. Roberto Ruggieri. These materials came together to outline an anthology of confessions – a sort of Spoon River Anthology in free verse – elaborated almost in the form of an epitaph, concerning the lives of some residents in the town of Norcia and its surroundings, part of which are now buried in the local cemetery . Those narrated by Maria Anna Stella are life stories of a microcosm lost in the Apennines and of a present time already eternally passed away. In her neat and gaudy performance, Maria Anna Stella managed to give back to the characters their own voice, with personal gestures and postures, without rants and pantomimes, according to a style that can bring to mind the storyteller technique of Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo .

Her aim is also to free the theatre from the narrow confines of the representation of literary works so that it finds its own social and spiritual utility by reconnecting to vital processes, to the truth of life in its flow, returning to being the place where reality itself is examined in its reality.

L’ANIMA BUONA DI SEZUAN
Sunday 27 October at 17.00
Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”
In L’Anima buona di Sezuan there is a small people that inhabits a place which is all the world’s places: they look like funny, bewildered and imperious characters, truer and more precise than in the real world. My master’s influence is all out evident in this play, especially in the concept that you represent a character so that someone can understand, welcome, empathise with and possibly provide a solution. In L’Anima buona there is all the tenderness and love for the human beings forced to mutually devour each other by poverty and sufferance, narrated with understanding spirit. Only theatre can talk from the inside in these harsh times and make us aware of the snarling masks we have become. Staging Brecht’s wonderful parable answers to the civil, political mission of my job, civil, political and poetry theatre.

Dolcenera’s artistic path starts in 2003 when she ranked first among the young people competing at the 53rd edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Siamo tutti là fuori”, winning also the prize assigned by the Press Room, Radio and TV. The song would then be included in her first album “Sorriso Nucleare” published in the same year. The Sanremese success is followed by an intense period of promotion that brings Emanuela (this is Dolcenera’s real name) to perform all over Italy from Piazza San Pietro for the “Concert in the Vatican” at the Casal del Marmo juvenile prison in Rome where she sang for the inmates.

In 2005 she participated in and won the music broadcast “Music Farm” (Raidue) with the song “Mai piu noi due” which will be included in her second album “Un Mondo Perfetto” (platinum record with over 150,000 copies sold that will remain in the ranking for a year) followed by a “Special Edition” of the album “Un Mondo Perfetto” with a live DVD where she duets with Claudio Baglioni and Loredana Bertè. 2005 ends with a positive balance for this young Salentine singer-songwriter who wins several awards during the year, including the Premio De Andrè, the prize for “Best emerging artist” at M.E.I. and the Silver Lion as “Musical Revelation of the Year”.

The following year opens with the publication of “Dolcenera canta il cinema” (February 2006), an album made exclusively for 20th Century Fox in which she reinterprets the most beautiful songs of American cinema. Still in the same year, Dolcenera decides to participate in the Sanremo Festival again and presents the song “Com’è straordinaria la vita”, then publishes her third album, “Il popolo dei Sogni”, an album that gets gold in a week and then platinum. Other awards follow (“The best voice” at the “Venice Music Awards” and a UNICEF testimonial for the global campaign “United for children, United against AIDS”), and the year goes on among concerts and the publication in Germany, Austria and Switzerland of her album “Un mondo Perfetto”.

Sales success in Germany led her to start in 2007 a two-month tour across the main German cities, a tour that ends with the publication of the new edition of the German album “Un Mondo Perfetto – Tour Edition”, with different live versions.

In 2007 she’s also involved in cinema: she signs and sings “In fondo alla notte” for the movie “La notte del mio primo amore”, readapted in Italian and interprets “Mon Amour” and “Sei tu”, for the film French “Finchè nozze non ci separino” (winner of the MIFF – Milan Film Festival) and participates as an actress in the film “Scrivilo sui muri” with Cristiana Capotondi and Primo Reggiani directed by Giancarlo Scarchilli.

The following year she undertakes a long European tour: she performed in the Deutches Theater of Monaco, at the Grand Arche à la Defense in Paris, opened the Zucchero concerts in Austria, took part in the Carthage International Music Festival in Tunis and in Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain. Moreover, on the occasion of the opening of the largest rock museum in Germany (which also dedicates a space to her), she plays at the Olympiastadion. She also opens Vasco Rossi’s concerts at the Conero Stadium in Ancona.

2009 is an important year for Dolcenera. After participating in the 59th edition of the Sanremo Festival with the song “Il mio amore unico”, she publishes  “Dolcenera nel paese delle meraviglie”.

The song debuts in first place in sales and in radio airplay and for more than three months it remains in the Top 20 of the most popular radio broadcasts. In addition to being awarded by the Lunezia Award commission for the literal-musical value, “Il mio amore unico” is included in the film “Amore 14” by Federico Moccia, which also received acclaim abroad: it is transmitted both by English radios (in the version remix), both in South America in the Spanish adaptation entitled “Único” interpreted by Alejandra Guzman.

Even the second and third single taken from the album “Dolcenera nel paese delle meraviglie” became radio hits, so much so that it brought it to the “Top Radio” award of the “Venice Music Awards 2009”. The year continues with a very long tour in Italy (including the opening of the Depeche Mode world tour show at the San Siro stadium in Milan) and abroad (participates in the “Great Wide Open” Rock Festival in Mühldorf am Inn in Germany, along with Deep Purple, Status Quo and other international artists).

In 2010, after years spent studying piano and clarinet, Dolcenera let herself be fascinated by the drums, so much so that the writing of the her new songs arose from drum-and-bass rhythmic designs. This is the starting point of her new album “Evolution of the species”, released May 17, 2011 on the K6DN label – Emi Music Italy. Written and arranged by Dolcenera herself, the album uses many collaborations and represents her new courageous artistic and musical journey, characterized by an acoustic pop-rock sound dominated by rhythm with electronic elements.

Book presentation: “Obsolescente”, by Giancarlo Trapanese @ Palazzo Leti Sansi (Via Arco di Druso)
Nov 8 @ 17:00

On Friday 8 November 2019 at 17.00 by the Hall of Honor in Palazzo Leti Sansi (Via Arco di Druso) RAI journalist and writer Giancarlo Trapanese presents his latest book entitled Obsolescente published by Italic Pequod. The novel is set mostly in the province of Perugia and deals with topical issues.

Scheduled obsolescence – Retired 75-year-old Perugian engineer Inna, a failed American marriage behind his shoulders, reflects on the meaning of a life devoid of affection and perspectives; a bit misogynistic and grumpy, was perhaps the world’s greatest expert on “planned obsolescence”, IT sector in ever-increasing development, that unsoundly imposes a deadline over the functioning of mobile phones, computers and many other devices by making them fail after a given period, to allow high production rates and employment levels. A life spent “spoiling” instead of “building” till destiny finally offers him a dramatic challenge with his past and his present, a challenge that will change his own lifeviews.

The conference will be attended by the president of the Order of Journalists of Umbria, Roberto Conticelli, and chaired by Dario Pompili, president of the Amici di Spoleto Association. Institutional greetings: Umberto De Augustinis, mayor of  Spoleto; Beatrice Montioni, Councilor for Education of the City of Spoleto.

The “Walter Tobagi” preparatory journalism course was launched in 2005 to commemorate the figure of the journalist of the Corriere della Sera Walter Tobagi, born in San Brizio di Spoleto and killed in Milan in 1980 by the Red Brigades. The edition that will take place during this school year will coincide with the 40th anniversary of Tobagi’s death.

IL LAGO DEI CIGNI
 “La Classique” Moscow Ballet
Thursday 14 November at 21.00
Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”
One of the immortal XIXth-century ballet history masterpieces signed by Marius Petipa. In spite of Tchaikovsky’s music, it was not immediately successful at its first 1877 representation at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, a succes that would later arrive in 1894, when it was staged at the Marijinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
Swan Lake tells the enchanting love story between the young prince Siegfried and Odette, an otherworldly creature transformed into a swan by the evil wizard Rothbart for refusing his love.
The Moscow Ballet “La Classique”, one of the most acclaimed classical dance companies that has toured all over Europe for over twenty-four years, brings back the excitement of this classic with its muffled atmosphere. Drawings of lights and suggestive scenographies will immerse the audience in the candid atmosphere of the most famous swan lake in the world.

La Domenica dei Sogni – Theatre for Families 12th edition @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Nov 17 @ 16:30

The theatre-for-families festival La Domenica dei Sogni, conceived to offer the families the magic of the world of theatre, returns for its 12th edition.

The 2019-2020 programme includes five new shows at the Teatro Nuovo Menotti, on Sundays at 16.30, attentively chosen from the repertoires of the best Italian companies.

This year the first two scheduled showws are free, thanks to the project “Arriva il teatro!”, promoted by Fontemaggiore, Mibact and Regione Umbria, to re-establish a cultural offer in the areas struck by the 2016 earthquake in central Italy, to enhance social interaction, tourist promotion and the visibility of the cultural and environmental heritage.

But there are also confirmations along with the many new features, ie the renewed collaboration with Fontemaggiore, one of the most recognized and appreciated family theatre companies to which we owe the first two shows, and with the “Library goes to Theatre” project, which involves the loan of books as a further possibility of deepening all those emotions and suggestions experienced on the scene, in a fertile encounter between languages and arts.

The season opens Sunday 17 November with Mago per Svago by l’Abile Teatro, that was awarded at the Festival Clown&Clown in Monte San Giusto in 2018 and at the Milano Clown Festival 2018.
FREE ADMISSION

On 1 December it is the turn of Scarpette Strette by Luna e GNAC Teatro, awarded at the Festival di Ribalta 2010, finalist at the Festival Fit in Lugano (CH), 2009 and finalist at the Festival La Rosa d’Oro in Padua, 2009.
FREE ADMISSION

On 26 January, Becco di Rame by Teatro del Buratto, which received the EOLO Award in 2018.

On 2 February it is the time for Più veloce di un raglio by CDT Cada die Teatro, also winner of an EOLO Award in 2015, Premio Padova – Amici di Emanuele Luzzati and Premjo Rosa d’Oro 2015.

The last appointment is for 22 March with L’ultimo T-Rex era un Bullo by Compagnia Gli Alcuni-Teatro.

Free admission for the underage
Adults pay 6 €.
The first two shows are free for all.

Battista wrote this show together with his wife Alessandra Moretti and the collaboration of Mariano D’Angelo, in which Battista (on stage also Stefano Borgia) investigates reality with his unmistakable verve and usual irreverent irony, that daily life that he always wanted to tell and that has always marked the success of his shows starting from a distance, from the family bar in San Giovanni that the comedian has never forgotten. The show tells a hilarious life journey, in which the comedian compares past times with modern times, trying perhaps to understand when life was better, but without sparing himself in highlighting vices and virtues of every age with a desecrating, amused touch.

La Domenica dei Sogni – Theatre for Families 12th edition @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Dec 1 @ 16:30

Art Meetings at Palazzo Collicola – Fabrizio Plessi, Digital Life @ Palazzo Collicola
Dec 6 @ 17:30

Art Meetings at Palazzo Collicola
Fabrizio Plessi: Digital Life
Friday 6 December 2019 – h 17.30
Noble Apartment – Hall of Honour
PALAZZO COLLICOLA – Spoleto

Fabrizio Plessi is considered a videoart pioneer in Italy and is certainly the first one to have used tv screens since the 1970s, as materials through which flows an unstoppable stream of digital water and fire.
His many participations in art festivals or international film and dance festivals have always showed him as an artist of innovative and anticipatory experiments. Sound performances, architecture, television and theatrical sets have formed the background on which he grafted his video sculptures, in which the use of technology is reduced to a natural element, a material to live together with, rather than struggle. Despite this, drawing still remains one of its fundamental creative and design stimuli.

Friday 6 December at Palazzo Collicola Fabrizio Plessi from 17.30 wil discuss his human and artistic experience, of his vision of art and the future of art, of the relationship between memory and innovation, past and present, starting from the assumption that technology must be a means and not an end, all the while showing images and videos that illustrate his spectacular, intense research.

After the meeting held last September with Michelangelo Pistoletto, this one with Plessi gives continuity to a series of dialogues on contemporary art that does not deny the ancient one, but rather shows it in a new light, reflecting Palazzo Collicola’s Modern Art Gallery’s relation with its classical picture gallery at the historical apartment.
The appointment is also part of the program of Mezz’ora dopo la chiusura.

Fabrizio Plessi was born in 1940 in Regio Emilia, but lives and works in Venice, Italy.  Countless participations in important exhibitions at national and international level include the Venice Biennale, Kassel Documenta or large anthological exhibitions held in various museums around the world: from the Guggenheim in New York to that in Bilbao, from the Civic Museum of Reggio Emilia to the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, from the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin to the IVAM in Valencia, from the MoCA in San Diego to the Ludwig Museum in Budapest and Koblenz, from the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover to the Museum of Modern Art in Mallorca, from the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna to the Foundation Mirò in Barcelona. In 2011 the Venice Pavilion of the Venice Biennale reopened after years with an impressive exhibition by Plessi entitled Vertical Seas.

Suggestive are his site-specific installations created for ancient and monumental spaces such as Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Valle dei Templi in Agrigento, the Lonja in Palma de Maiorca, the Sala dei Giganti in Palazzo Te in Mantua or the Terme di Caracalla in Rome, demonstrating a passion for classicism and spectacularity confirmed also by the electronic sets created for Titanic, Icarus, The Threepenny Opera, Romeo and Juliet, set to music by composers such as Philipp Glass and Michael Nyman.
In 2015 he represented the Belarusian Pavilion for Expo Milano with a monumental electronic sculpture and the Liquid Life / Liquid Life exhibition was held in Venice at the Arsenale and Galleria G. Franchetti Ca ’d’Oro exhibition venues; in 2017 he designed Fenix DNA for the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, a suggestive total, immersive and multisensory work of art, while in 2018 he held a solo exhibition at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

At the Brenner Pass, the futuristic Plessi Museum was inaugurated in November 2013, a huge work of architecture, sculpture and design that perfectly integrates with the naturalistic vision of the surrounding environment.
For ten years he taught “Technology Humanization” at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne.

Gallery Concerts
2019/2020 Season

Sunday 8 December 2019 at 11 at the Sala Pegasus in Piazza G. Bovio, Spoleto, the first concert of the new season organised by Officina d’Arte e Tessuti will take place.

As usual, curators identified a specific period and analysed it, to offer the audience a reading of the historical, artistic context, to define connections between music and visual arts in an acoustically perfect, architecturally stimulating environment, not unlike how the gallery organises its contemporary art exhibitions.
Last year’s theme was Romanticism, in particular the romantic lied, while this year the focus is on the XXth Century. “XXth-century Musical Routes” is the title of this edition, that opens on December 8 with a performance dedicated to two fundamental authors of modern and contemporary music, Alban Berg e Paul Hindemith.

Maurizio De Giovanni is a Neapolitan writer of international renown, who authored numerous successful books, from the series Il Commissario Ricciardi to I bastardi di Pizzofalcone. This time he has taken on the comedy, whose result is now going on stage under the direction of Alessandro Gassmann.

“This story has very big surprises in it, mysteries that only a great mystery writer like Maurizio De Giovanni would have been able to handle with this ability, that really make it a small contemporary classic. Theatre needs actors who stick to the characters in a modern way, and I think that Massimiliano Gallo, with whom I shared film sets and adventures, is today one of the most effective and complete Italian actors. It will be a great joy for me to direct him on a character who is ideal on him. This is what we do at the theatre, or at least we strive to do, we desperately seek the truth, and we trust in your desire to believe in it. Have fun.” Alessandro Gassmann

Exhibition | Convergenze. Notargiacomo and the Spoleto Modern Art Gallery Collection @ Palazzo Collicola
Dec 14 2019 – Mar 8 2020 all-day

Convergenze. Notargiacomo and the Spoleto Modern Art Gallery Collection
curated by Marco Tonelli
“G. Carandente” Modern Art Gallery
PALAZZO COLLICOLA – Spoleto
14 December 2019 – 8 March 2020

Inauguration
Saturday 14 December 2019 – h 11.30

Open: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
10:30 – 13:00 / 15:00 – 17:30

In many ways, Gianfranco Notargiacomo is a forerunner of non-codified languages, capable of moving from form to image, from structure to painting with the same skill and intelligence. Precisely for this reason it represented the solution to contrasting, intertwined nodes, opposing with one another, divergent and converging at the same time.

The Spoleto Modern Art Gallery has a rich deposit of works, mostly donations or acquisitions made over the years, some of which are destined to rotate and leave the stores from time to time.

Gianfranco Notargiacomo accepted the invitation to seek a dialogue with the artists and the works of the collection preserved in the deposits of Santo Chiodo, finding the keystone of the curatorial proposal in about twenty paintings by authors with whom he had an actual relationship, such as Burri, Sadun, Bendini, Pace, Vacchi, Asdrubali, Rossano, Gandini, Cascella, Ceroli, Boille, Cotani, Mattiacci, Luzzi, Pozzati.

The Convergenze exhibition opens at Palazzo Collicola Saturday 14 December at 11.30 and will be visitable till Synday 8 March 2020. The exhibition project takes the title from the famous installation Le nostre divergenze, the artist’s first personal exhibition held in Rome in 1971 at Plinio De Martiis’ La Tartaruga Gallery, then repeated several times over the decades in various museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome: over two hundred colored plastic dolls that invade the gallery in all its spaces. The first time it was exhibited in public the installation was defined in the Herald Tribune by Edith Schloss as “The most surprising show”.

In the spaces of the ground floor of Palazzo Collicola, right where the permanent collection of the Gallery of Modern Art was once located, about 140 little men will talk with the works selected from the collection’s deposit, in a continuous flow between memory and present, as if they were witnesses enchanted by an apparition, by an unveiling. On the occasion of the Notargiacomo exhibition, he will donate one of his sculptures, a typical Takete, to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Spoleto, which will also be part of the exhibition along with other sculptures in the series, symbolically bringing together his works with those of the museum. During the exhibition, a public meeting will be held in which the artist will illustrate his links with the individual artists with whom he has chosen to dialogue. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the RUFA of Rome.

The exhibition will be open from Friday to Sunday, on Thursday 26 December and on Monday 6 January 2020 from 10.30 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 17.30.

Gianfranco Notargiacomo (Rome, 1945) In the 1970s he holds exhibitions at the Galleria La Tartaruga di Roma, Galleria La Salita, Palazzo delle Esposizioni. In 1980 he participates to the exhibition conceived by Flavio Caroli Magico Primario, at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. The deep relation with Emilio Vedova dates to this period, and led to Vedova proposing him for the Premio della Presidenza della Repubblica at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. In 1982, 1986 and 2011 he is invited to the Venice Biennale di Venezia; in the 1980s he holds personal exhibitions  at Castel Sant’Elmo, Naples, Casa del Mantegna in Mantua, Museo Laboratorio of the Università La Sapienza in Rome, Palazzo Reale in Milan. Nel 2009 tiene la mostra Le nostre divergenze 1971-2009 curata da Mariastella Margozzi alla Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma. In 2011 he is in Hangzhou, China, by the Zhejiang Daily Ideal Culture Development Company, then in Shanghai, at the Heng Yuanxiang Museum, where he creates two large Takète. In 2013 at the Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno he holds his exhibition A grandi linee. Among the many collective exhibitions, he is featured in the VIIIth and in the XIth Biennale de Paris and in the Sydney Biennale, he exhibited at the Hayward Gallery in London, at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, at the São Paulo Museum in Brasil, at the Taiwan Museum of Art and he is featured in the collection Artisti Italiani del XX secolo at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila, Florence and Rome, where in 2015 he is nominated Maestro Accademico Emerito. In 2013, by iniziative of the President of the Republic, he is awarded  the honour of Commendatore Ordine al Merito of the Republic of Italy.

Raspi: Collages and paintings 1959 – 1963

The exhibition focuses on a Spoletan artist who as a member of the Spoleto Six and whose works are included in the Modern Art Gallery’s collection.

An experimentation that originated between 1958 and 1964, the Collages represent the climax of an importsant aesthetic research by Piero Raspi. Since the earliest 1958 works, still as a member of the Six, their abstract, refined architectures of simple, overlapping sheets seem to be crossed by vital leaps that become more and more marked over time. In the early 1960s, the structure of the works becomes more dynamic with the emergence, among the layers of paper, of components such as photographs, letters and three-dimensional objects. This reference to everyday reality gives the Collages an energy of non-sense, which puts the works closer to the contemporary new-dada decontextualization of American Robert Rauschenberg.

The production alternates with large informal paintings, albeit with obvious differences: from dimensions to materials, from chromatic to spatial impact. But what most differentiates the paintings from the Collages is the presence in the latter of an ironic vein, light and subtle like a veil. A common characteristic of all is the fact that for years they have been hidden in the archives of the author and for this reason they are absolutely new to some.

The exhibition inaugurates in Palazzo Collicola on Saturday 14 December at 11.30 and will be visitable till Sunday 8 March 2020, from Friday to Sunday, on Thursday 26 December 2019 and on Monday 6 January 2020 from 10.30 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 17.30.

Piero Raspi – Born on 12 February, 1926 in Spoleto. He starts his fortunate artistic career within post-Cubism and founds the Group of Spoleto in the early 1950s. In the second half of the 1950s the main reference becomes the informal sphere, from which he learns new expressive possibilities of the matter outside of any surviving figurative need. In 1957 he joins the artists gravitating around the gallery “L’Attico” in Rome, where he exhibits repeatedly. In 1958 he participates in the Venice Biennale, gathering international fame. In this period he is identified as one of the protagonist of materic informalism, akin to Burri and Tàpies. In the early 1960s he holds many personal and collective exhibitions in Italy, including the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. Abroad he exhibits in London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Stuttgart, Paris, Brussels, Cologne Montreal, Madrid, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Chicago, Lucerne, Tel Aviv, Salzburg, Zurich and Tokyo. In 1967 he settles in Pennsylvania and starts confronting himself with Pop Art. In this period he paints a series of works that would eventually exhibit in Philadelphia and New York. In 1978, a new pictorial phase starts, marked by an unprecedented chromatism. With the beginning of the new millennium, in addition to the creation of monochromes, he embraces other forms of creative expression and makes use of new materials such as steel. In 2001 in Spoleto, at the Albornoz Palace, he realizes a wall sculpture in steel plates, where he transfers the abstract and refined architecture of the Collages made since the late 1950s. Starting from the second decade of the 2000s, he focuses on the critical revision and cataloging of his works, as well as on the restoration of some papers and Collages of the 1950s and 1960s.

CABARET YIDDISH by MONI OVADIA
Festival of Two Worlds

Featuring the Stage Orchestra (Maurizio Dehò on violin, Paolo Rocca on clarinet, Albert Florian Mihai on accordeon, Luca Garlaschelli on double bass). Sound engineer Mauro Pagiaro. Production: Oylem Goylem Produzioni and Corvino Produzioni.

Yiddish language, music and culture, i.e. that unfathomable mix of German, Hebrew, Polish, Russian, Ukranian and Romanian, the universal condition of the Wandering Jew, his being stateless and rootless always and forever, are at the centre of “Yiddish Cabaret”, a chamber show that would later evolve into Oylem Goylem.

It could be said that the show has the classic form of cabaret, the way it is commonly understood. It alternates musical pieces and songs with stories, anecdotes, quotes, that the proven skill of the entertainer makes tastefully vivid. But the curiosity of the show lies in the fact that it is entirely dedicated to that part of Jewish culture of which Yiddish is the language and Klezmer the music.

A show that “smacks of steppes and backrooms, of streets and sinagogues”. All that Ovadia calls “the sound of exile, the music of dispersion”. In a word: diaspora.

Klezmer derives from the Hebraic words Kley Zemer, that refer to the musical instruments (violin, strings and clarinet) used by Eastern Jew traditional musicians since the XVIth century.

The show

I chose to forget “philology” and follow another chance, proclaiming that this music transcends its “scientifically determined” space-time coordinates, to talk about the distances of man, his wounded soul, his absolute feelings, his relationships with the natural and social world, his being “holy”, his ability to stand up in the face of the universe, weak yet sublime. The humble men who created all this before being able to become free men, have been robbed of their culture and transformed into stupid consumers but have nevertheless managed to leave us a posthumous chance, a music that is generated where the distance between heaven and earth has the consistency of a thin hymeneal membrane which, vibrating, perhaps only for the time of a song, suggests, that perhaps we have been put here for something else, even if it took the wrong road.

The Legend of Ennio Morricone
Ensemble Simphony Orchestra

28 December, 9 p.m.
Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Mission, The Legend of 1900, Once Upon a Time in the West, Cinema Paradiso, A Fistful of Dollars, The Hateful Eight, Once Upon a Time in America, For a Few Dollars More, Malèna… The extraordinary masterpieces of one of the greatest musical composers rearranged and proposed in a theatrical concert of great emotional impact.

500 soundtracks, 70 million records sold worldwide, six nominations and two Oscars won, three Grammys, four Golden Globes and a Golden Lion make Ennio Morricone a music giant of all time.

Directed by Maestro Giacomo Loprieno, the ENSEMBLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA approaches Morricone’s music after important national and international collaborations: Mario Biondi, Max Gazzè, Franco Battiato, Giovanni Allevi, Renato Zero, Francesco Renga, Pooh, Baustelle, PFM, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, Nile Rodgers, Sam Smith, Luis Bacalov. With over six hundred concerts in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Holland, France, Austria, the United Kingdom and Belgium, the orchestra shows great versatility and attention to every type of music, with a repertoire that ranges from the most famous opera arias to the soundtracks of films of world renown (such as Frozen and Harry Potter).

Soloists and musicians of important Italian theatres and symphonic institutions will perform, such as Maestro Ferdinando Vietti at the cello and Maestro Stefano Benedetti at the trumpet. Among the special guests, the soprano Anna Delfino, well known to European opera lovers, will revive the emotion of Deborah’s Theme from Once Upon a Time in America and Cirque du Soleil violinist Attila Simon will perform the interrupted concert for violin from Canone Inverso.

Although more than forty years have elapsed since the publication of the novel, the relevance of some problems that emerged in the second post-war period and that were examined by Böll in the early 1970s still remains: among these there are undoubtedly those concerning the use of the means of mass communication and the forms of violence inherent in media language.

Heinrich Böll (1959): “…those who publicly use words put whole worlds in motion, and in the small space between two lines so much dynamite can be amassed, to blow up these worlds…”

“Staging a novel implies being able to count on performers who fully embody the different characters conceived by the author” comments director Franco Però. “It was fortunate for us to have this group of actors – members of the Compagnia del Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia – that I immediately envisioned in the various characters of the book. Peppino Mazzotta, a fair and complete artist, and Elena Radonicich, whom I found perfect to give life to Katharina Blum, have joined them – finally on the stage, after their happy cinema experiences and in the most followed television dramas”.

La Domenica dei Sogni – Theatre for Families 12th edition @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Jan 26 @ 16:30

TEMPESTA
Aterballetto
Sunday 9 February 2020 at 17.00
Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”
Tempesta is but another Aterballetto’s challenge: to test the dance and its ability to tell stories and characters of a theatrical narration, illuminating them in an original way and observing them from new points of view, guaranteeing a clear legibility of the history of the Bard, without renouncing to open visionary dimensions.

So we will start from a storm, the one that we can imagine led Prospero and Miranda to be shipwrecked on the island, to then retrace the line of events outlined by Shakespeare, highlighting some themes of strong human depth, to go to the heart of one of the most extraordinary inventions designed for the stage by the great English writer.

Nostalgia di Dio

Teatro Caio Melisso – Spazio Carla Fendi
Homesickness. This could be an alternative title of this show. I consider the affections to be the home, and the affections are the only dimension left that I relate to the sacred. The world limits us, the house welcomes us and expands us. It is in this powerful and affectionate flowering that children are born, who are the other question on which this spectacle is tied, without answering it.
In particular, I mean the children at their earliest stages, small, omnipotent Gods. Influenced by the fable we’ve been told, illustrated by the endless Madonnas with Child, my Catholic child imaginary – which is the only one I have, as probably many of us who would later give up – has rooted there. It is there, before the age of 10, on those images, that the indelible impression was formed: that of a child-God, seen from the perspective of the mother.
In short, God, for me, is more a son than a father. A son who, if not really a God, is at least almighty. This is according to Freud what we all are for a short time. How can we not want to go back?
Nostalgia di Dio moves therefore in this strange crossing between the homesickness and the nostalgia of the omnipotent childhood, which has matured inside me lately, without understanding it yet completely.
All children are children. God is a child. God is a son. Are all children God? Who knows. However, one thing is known: for mothers, children, they never grow up.

The return on stage of the famous comic duo in a show of imitations, sketches and musical performances.

Massimo Lopez and Tullio Solenghi return together on stage after 15 years like two old friends who meet again, in a show of which they are interpreters and authors, assisted by the Jazz Company of maestro Gabriele Comeglio. The result is a roaring array of voices, imitations, sketches, musical performances, improvisations and interactions with the public. In almost two hours of the show, Tullio and Massimo, “old stage foxes”, offer themselves to the audience with the amusing and emotional empathy of their unmistakable “trademark”: fun is predominant, but there will be moments of deep emotion.

La Domenica dei Sogni – Theatre for Families 12th edition @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Mar 22 @ 16:30

LE AFFINITÀ ELETTIVE
Tuesday 24 marzo 2020 at 21.00
Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”
A great game of balances and contrasts between being and having to be, between instinct and reason, between sensuality and morality, between immediacy and reflection, between destiny and will, is featured in Goethe’s Le Affinità Elettive. The attempt is to show the forces that emerge from the dissolution of marriage. Passion loses all its right, its happiness and its power when it tries to come to terms with the wealthy and guaranteed bourgeois life. After a long separation, Carlotta and Edoardo get together and decide to get married and engage in such stubborn defense of their relationship, that they isolate themselves in a secluded place. However, the much sought-after balance is suddenly upset by the arrival of a friend of Edoardo, the Captain, followed shortly after by the arrival of Carlotta’s niece, Ottilia. The conjugal balance between Carlotta and Edoardo goes into crisis and the elective affinities begin to progressively work and modify, and overturn the bonds.

<!--:it-->Fiera della Madonna di Loreto<!--:--><!--:en-->Fair of Our Lady of Loreto | 8-9 September<!--:--> @ Viale Trento e Trieste | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

Also known with the name of “Onions’ Fair”, it represents the traditional meeting opportunity for citizens living in Spoleto’s area, and it takes place in Viale della Stazione and in the surrounding streets.

It is Spoleto’s biggest fair, where you can find all kinds of products, including (but not limited to) clothing, gastronomy, houseware and the most diverse gifts and knick-knacks.

Granted in 1598 by pope Clement VIII, it originally used to take place on 21 Aprile; in its occasion, special benefits and immunities were universally allowed, save for bandits and rebels. In 1664 it was postponed to 13 June, St. Anthony’s feast, maintaining all privileges.

Its dates in modern times are 8 and 9 September, the day of the Virgin’s nativity; it is not known when these dates were established.
