<!--:it-->LO SCHIACCIANOCI - Ballet of Moscow<!--:--><!--:en-->The Nutcracker - Ballet of Moscow<!--:--> @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The Ballet of Moscow will stage Čajkovskij’s Nutcracker on Monday 12 December 2016 at h 21.00 by the Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti” in Spoleto.

Love, dream and fantasy are the marks of one of the most charming ballets in the history of classical dance. The bewitching scenography by the Ballet of Moscow drags the audience right into Hoffmann’s plot. For its fairy tale-like, happy-ending features, as well as its generally enchanted atmosphere, The Nutcracker (that features sweets, toy soldiers, Christmas trees, snowflakes, dancing flowers, wicked mice, prodigies, prince charming and a fairy), has become a ballet that enthralls the young and the grown-up alike. This is why it is the most represented Christmas show in the whole world. The finale is marked by the exquisite “Вальс цветов” (Waltz of the Flowers), after which Clare will end up sitting in her easy-chair with the nutcracker on her womb, happy of her Christmas Rêverie.

Swan Lake @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Feb 11 @ 21:15
<!--:it-->Il Lago dei Cigni<!--:--><!--:en-->Swan Lake<!--:--> @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

The magic of Swan Lake, one of the most famous and acclaimed ballets of the twentieth century, will kick off Live in Umbria, a recently presented series of events organized in Umbria by Athanor Events. On February 11th (9.15 pm), Raffaele Paganini National Company will stage Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, directed and choreographed by Luigi Martelletta, at Spoleto’s Teatro Nuovo ‘Gian Carlo Menotti’.

Swan Lake is a great love story which ends with the death of the two unhappy lovers to the tune of a rousing music. The show was born from an idea that for many years the director and choreographer Luigi Martelletta pursued and hoped to stage. His long and intense career as a principal dancer at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and in many other Italian and European theaters enabled him to study in depth, to examine and to dance many times this spectacular ballet.

Strongly linked to academic tradition, Martelletta proposes a more streamlined, more lively work, lightening all the mannerisms and pantomimes that are part of the classical repertoire, while maintaining the original choreography: the swans, the Spanish dance, the Russian dance, the waltz , the pas de deux, and much more.

The particularity of this show consists in the ability to combine fantasy and reality, to present itself as alive and topical. And this is the stylistic peculiarity of this ‘Swan Lake’. On stage, the absolute beauty of athletic, seductive dancers, like international etoiles Arianne Lafita Gonzalvez and Vittorio Galloro, together with outstanding soloists, will stage a popular success that still exerts an enduring appeal because it embodies the romantic aspiration towards an unattainable ideal.

Focus Young Arab Choreographers @ Cantiere Oberdan
Sep 21 @ 21:30
<!--:it-->Focus Young Arab Choreographers<!--:--><!--:en-->Focus Young Arab Choreographers<!--:--> @ Cantiere Oberdan | Spoleto | Italia

La MaMa Umbria presents two young Arabic choreographers at Cantiere Oberdan

The young dancers and choreographers Bassam Abou Diab and Mounir Saeed will perform at Cantiere Oberdan  on Thursday 21 September at 21.30, for Focus young arab choreographers, a project in support of intercultural dialogue, supported by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism in collaboration with 11 Italian partners.

Two performances in an evening.

Under The Flesh by and with Bassam Abou Diab (Lebanon) presents a study focusing on cultures, body, death and rituals. A performance that originated from having lived through war, before and after, and being forced, in the devastation of body and spirit, to use an enormous number of strategies to survive.
Samah Tarabay, percussionist, will accompany him in the performance.

What about Dante by and with Mounir Saeed (Egypt) is a work inspired by the Inferno of Dante’s Divine Comedy, mixed with the spiritualism of Sufism and the musicality of Christian hymns and oriental songs, aiming at a fusion between different cultures’ spirituality.

Thursday 8 March at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo, the closing play will be Rosalind Franklin. Il segreto della vita by Anna Ziegler, directed by Filippo Dini, featuring Asia Argento, Filippo Dini. The Great History, the discovery of DNA, and the extraordinary tale of scientist Rosalind Franklin’s last years, facing one of the most important, debated discoveries in the history of scientific research.

2017/2018 Prose Season
27 October 2017 – 8 March 2018

Ottavia Piccolo, Massimo Dapporto, Monica Guerritore, Francesca Reggiani, Asia Argento, Filippo Dini, David Coco, Liv Ferracchiati are but some of the protagonists of the Spoleto 2017-2018 Prose Season that includes 7 plays, six at the Teatro Nuovo and one at the Caio Melisso.

The start is on Friday 27 October at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo “Menotti” with Occident Express (Haifa è nata per star ferma). Written by Stefano Massini, it features Ottavia Piccolo and the Orchestra Multietnica di Arezzo. In 2015 an old woman from Mosul flees with her 4-yo granddaughter, covering 5.000 Km from Iraq to the Baltic Sea, across the so-called Balcan Route. This is her story.

Friday 24 November at 21, at the Teatro Nuovo, it’s the turn of Mariti e Mogli, adapted and directed by Monica Guerritore who is also in the cast along with Francesca Reggiani. The play is freely adapted from Woody Allen’s much praised film.

Saturday 9 December at 21, again at the Teatro Nuovo, Massimo Dapporto is the protagonist of Un borghese piccolo piccolo, extraordinary novel by Vincenzo Cerami who inspired Monicelli’s cinema masterpiece, a tragic comedy that offers hilarious moments. Adaptation and direction by Fabrizio Coniglio.

Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 January at 21 and Wednesday 10 January at 18 at the Teatro Caio Melisso – spazio Carla Fendi, it is the time of Todi is a small town in the center of Italy, written and directed by Liv Ferracchiati. What is life like in an Italian small town? Michele, Stella, Elisa and Caroline are four guys from Todi. A fifth character, a documentarist, connects fiction to reality observing and noting the features of the city and its inhabitants. What is life like in a place where everybody knows everyone? What should you rather avoid doing in Todi? These are but some of the questions that were actually asked to more than a hundred people in Todi, that the play aims at giving back through a collage that supports the story of the four protagonists.

Saturday 20 January at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo, the Györ Ballet Company (one of the oldest, most praised European contemporary dance companies) will stage two masterpieces, Maurice Ravel’s  Bolero and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Friday 9 February at 21, Teatro Nuovo, Il Giuramento by Claudio Fava, directed by Ninni Bruschetta and featuring David Coco. Heads, you can count them or cut them. The fascist regime didn’t choose one. It counted 1238 and cut twelve, casual heroes of those who only have left an extreme resource of dignity, that of refusal. This happened on 13 November 1931. FLAMENCO EN VIVO – Ballet Flamenco Español @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti
Jan 27 @ 21:00
<!--:it-->FLAMENCO EN VIVO - Ballet Flamenco Español<!--:--><!--:en-->FLAMENCO EN VIVO - Ballet Flamenco Español<!--:--> @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti | Spoleto | Umbria | Italia

After its successful tour in the Middle East, the Ballet Flamenco Español will perform in Italy with Flamenco en vivo.

The Spanish dance company will be at Spoleto’s Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti next January 27, at 21.00.

A show with a live orchestra that will lead viewers into the most fascinating of gypsy cultures. The dancers’ virtuosity, on the boards of the tablao, is interwoven with the sound architectures created by a quartet of masters of flamenco music.

The show, under the artistic direction of Juan Manuel Carrillo and Luis Ortega, features 10 dancers and presents flamenco art in its purest version, the expression of a culture of rhythmic movement, and of a music handed down orally since the fifteenth century.

Over the decades, thanks to the Gypsies’ migrations, dance and music have been mixed and enriched with Middle Eastern and South American cultures. Flamenco en vivo offers a tour around the world involving the spectator with its archaic yet refined expressive power.

An event by I Love Spoleto.

On Saturday, July 21 (h. 21.15) the dance show MEDITERRANEA will be staged at the Roman Theatre. A choreographic circumnavigation through the music of cultures overlooking the Mediterranean. A show that was born in 1993 for the Balletto di Toscana and that immediately got a resounding success. For its 15th anniversary, in 2008, he was re-produced for the Teatro alla Scala company, marking Mauro Bigonzetti’s first Scala debut. Mediterranea is a production by Daniele Cipriani. An event by I Love Spoleto.

The Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre will perform in the splendid setting of the Roman Theatre on Friday, July 27 at 21.15 with READY, a show specially designed by Giulia Staccioli, with spectacular choreographies taken from Eureka (2016), Puzzle (2012) and Play (2008), maintaining the dynamic, athletic, poetic and original spirit that has made the Kataklò the most loved and requested Italian company of athletic theater in the world. An event by I Love Spoleto.

Another important dance appointment will take place on Saturday, July 28 at 21.00, still at the Roman Theatre: the Great International Dance Gala tribute to Rudolf Nureyev, by Daniele Cipriani. Eighty years after its birth and twenty-five years after his death, the show is a journey through the most significant stages of the extraordinary artist’s career. The refined multimedia projections by video artist Massimiliano Siccardi will be accompanied, at the beginning, by a rare recording directed by Nureyev. An event by I Love Spoleto.

Double appointment – Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August ( Teatro Caio Melisso, h. 18.00) – with the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale and EINE KLEINE MUSIK 2018: a musical tribute to LA FRANCE with pieces by Erik Satie, Gabriel Fauré and Francis Poulenc. Afterwards, BA-TA-CLAN, the famous opera that marked the first great success of Jacques Offenbach, based on Ludovic Halévy’s libretto. Direction and staging by Giorgio Bongiovanni and Lisa Nava with the Soloists of Spoleto’s Teatro Lirico Sperimentale “A. Belli”.

Saturday August 18, at the Complesso Monumentale di San Nicolò (h. 21.30), David Riondino will be the protagonist of IL DIO DENARO (Non avrai altro Dio all’infuori di me) e altre letture (Italian for THE MONEY GOD – Thou shalt have no other gods before me – and other readings).
It is a special event included in the Libro d’Ingresso series, that marks a further step in the artistic collaboration between David Riondino and musician Fabrizio De Rossi Re.

Two concerts at dawn are organized by Umbria Ensemble chamber group, both of which will be held at the Rocca Albornoziana. The first one will take place on Saturday 11 August at 6.10, a tribute to Leonard Bernstein on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the great composer’s birth. The second one, Da Vivaldi ai Beatles, on Saturday 25 August at 6.25, will be a musical journey from Vivaldi to Boccherini, passing through some Beatles’ repertoire, reinterpreted by guitarist Leo Brouwer.

On Friday, August 31 at 21.30, Italian singer Caparezza will perform at the Municipal Stadium, with its Prisoner 709 Tour. The Tour promotes the homonymous seventh studio album by the brilliant artist, songwriter and rapper whose most peculiar expressive feature is stylistic contamination and sound eclecticism. An event by I Love Spoleto.

Tribute to Rudolf NUREYEV
INTERNATIONAL DANCE GALA

curated by Daniele Cipriani
Twenty-five years past his passing and eighty years from his birth, étoiles and first dancers from the world’s major theatres convene in Spoleto

Saturday 28 July at 21,00 at the Roman Theatre, the Gran Gala Internazionale di Danza – Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev organized by Daniele Cipriani.
A journey through the extraordinary dancer’s most meaningful steps, featuring a rare shooting directed by Nureyev, entwined with refined multimedia projections by videoartist Massimiliano Siccardi.

Tickets: https://bit.ly/2MEJXW1

Rudolf Nureyev lives. He lives in the memories of those who saw him soaring up and floating in the air, in his intense performances that made him a true protagonist of classical dance.

He profoundly loved Italy and was twice at the Spoleto Festival, in 1964 and again in the 1980s. As all the world’s theatres pay tribute to the unforgettable dancer, Spoleto joins in the celebrations.

“Dance is my life. A predestination exists in me, a spirit that not all have. I must fulfill my destiny, mine’s a road with no return. It is my sentence, possibly, but my happiness too. If I’ll be asked when will I stop dancing, the answer will be: when I’ll stop living”. RUDOLF NUREYEV

<!--:it-->***ANNULLATO*** CARMEN - Ballet Flamenco Español <!--:--><!--:en-->***CANCELLED*** CARMEN - Ballet Flamenco Español <!--:--> @ Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti

On February 21 at 21.00, the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti will host the Ballet Flamenco Español company from Madrid with the famous Carmen Suite ballet, as part of its Tourné season (sponsored by AUCMA and MEA Concerts).

The most evocative work of French composer and pianist Georges Bizet will meet popular flamenco music. The sensual and harmonious notes are represented on stage with the elegance of Spanish classical dance and the pure strength of flamenco. The subject of Carmen, taken from a short story by Prosper Mérimée, is interpreted here by mixing different styles of Hispanic dance, exalting an ancient Spain of bullfighters and passionate gypsies. The powerful colour, the result of continuous stylistic research, reigns everywhere on the scene, boldly interpreting the majesty of Bizet’s work.
